National Honor Society Evaluation Criteria
Following is the evaluative criteria established in the year 2003 by the faculty selection committee,
composed of the principal, the faculty adviser, and four other faculty representatives.
A. All students are eligible who meet a minimum grade point average of 3.8 cumulative at the end of the first semester of the first semester of their sophomore year and/or 3.5 cumulative at the end of the first semester of their junior year.
B. All professional staff at Northern will then rate the eligible candidates in two areas: LEADERSHIP and CHARACTER. They will use the following scale:
5....exceptional, creative, unusual
4....receptive, constructive, productive
3....cooperative but passive, productive
2....passive, non-productive
1....negative
0....does not exhibit characteristics of a NHS member
The evaluation of SERVICE to the school or outside the school is to be done by staff members responsible for dealing with students in a WL Northern activity or a sponsor for an outside (sport) activity. This would include activities like sports, clubs, and plays, but would not include credit work like lab assistants.
C. The rating listed in section B, collected and compiled from each teacher will be averaged in all three categories. These totals will then be presented to and considered by the faculty advisory committee. The following standards will be applied:
a. All three categories must have a rating of 3.5 or above;
b. One of the three (service, leadership, character) must have a rating of 3.5 or above; and
c. Another one of the three (service, leadership, character) must have a rating of 4.0 or above.
D. Finally, students must be evaluated in the categories of leadership and character by a minimum of one teacher for each semester they have been enrolled. For juniors, that would be six teachers; for seniors, eight teachers. Any student falling below these numbers would have his transcript checked to see if he/she were a transfer student. If so, the number would be reduced accordingly.
Students are invited to membership at the end of first semester. Sophomores and juniors that meet the G.P.A. requirement will receive an invitation at the end of first semester (after midterms).
