Welcome - Bienvenidos
Hola y bienvenidos a ustedes al sitio web de Catherine Savone. Estas páginas les van a servir de recursos para ayudarles con las clases de español conmigo como su profesora. ¡Adelante y agarra el español por los cuernos!
Bienvenidos y felicidades to you for selecting the Spanish Language and Culture program as part of your high school experience at Walled Lake Northern. Choosing to study Spanish is a very conscientious decision on your part. Even if you are exposed to only two years of Spanish, you should begin to see an improvement in your overall English language skills as well as your ability to connect with other subjects...and ultimately with advanced study you will also see the same on standardized tests (such as ACT, SAT, AP, etc...). Today most all colleges and universities include a second language as part of what is required for admissions or graduation. In Michigan, it is required by the State that our public school diploma include two credits of a language other than English.
¿Quién soy yo? I am Catherine Savone, Spanish teacher and World Language Department Chair at Walled Lake Northern High School. I have been teaching for 26 years. My language credentials are in Italian, French, and Spanish. I have earned a Bachelor of Arts in Italian Language and Culture, a Master of Arts in Modern Languages (Italian, French, Spanish), and most recently a Master of Science in Educational Leadership. I have a lot of travel and study abroad experience. I received a diploma in Literature, History, and Art History at the Universitá di Genova (in Genoa, Italy). I also have a professional translator's certificate from the Instituto Dante Alighieri (in Rome, Italy).
I've traveled throughout Italy, Spain, France, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru. I've also been to England, the Netherlands, Honduras, Bahamas, Jamaica, and through many of our amazing states including Alaska...and of course I have been to Canada because I have family there as well as in Italy. I have led five successful trips abroad with students from Northern in three continents - Europe, Central and South America! I am married and I have two fun children, Marco and Francesca.
In my spare time, I love to cook, garden, read, practice yoga, clean house (yep, it's true!), and be with my family. I thoroughly enjoy my job at Walled Lake Northern. Each year I get to meet so many great new young people. It has only been a pleasure to share my love for people, language, culture, and travel with them. I look forward to many more years working together with this wonderful community.
Mis metodos de enseñar: A student in my classes can expect a proficiency based instructional method. My students and I can enjoy sharing Spanish in an immersive atmosphere of as much authentic second language and culture acquisition as possible. Students are exposed to a lot of language and coached to use it as much as they are appropriately able at their level to continuously encourage communication in social and academic settings with native language speakers. Students are asked to base their acquisition on authentic fictional and nonfictional texts, videos, tv and radio programming, advertisements and real life connections with Spanish speakers in our community or abroad. Students are held to standards set out by ACTFL and the State of Michigan for World Languages and they are assessed for their level of proficiency on interpersonal speaking and writing, presentational speaking and writing, and in interpretive reading, listening and viewing performance.
