Math Overview

We sure have a busy year ahead of us!

We will continue to use the Everyday Mathematics series that you have become so familiar with over your previous years of study here in Walled Lake.

We will use the Everyday Math Online online site a lot this year.

First semester, we will cover the following topics:

UNIT 1: Area and Volume

- finding area of rectangles with fractional side lengths by tiling

- determine the volume of rectangular prisms

- unit conversions

EDM4 Online Games: Baseball Multiplication, Buzz Games, Name that Number, and Prism Pile-Up

IXL Skills: 3rd Grade-- N.2 and M.13 | 5th Grade-- O.3, O.4, EE.4, EE.7, and EE.9-13

UNIT 2: Whole Number Place Value and Operations

- exponents and powers of 10

- traditional multiplication

- partial quotients division

- mental division

- interpreting remainders

UNIT 3: Fraction Concepts, Addition and Subtraction

- connecting fractions and division

- division using a number line

- fraction estimation using benchmarks and number sense

- adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers

- addition of fractions with unlike denominators

- fraction of a number

UNIT 4: Decimal Concepts and Coordinate Grids

- decimal place value

- decimals into the thousandths

- addition and subtraction of decimals and money

- introduction of the coordinate grid

UNIT 5: Operations with Fractions

- finding common denominators

- multiplying and dividing decimals

UNIT 7: Multiplying Mixed Numbers; Geometry; Graphs

- multiplication of mixed numbers

- area of rectangles with fractional side lengths

- fractional division

- hierarchy of triangles and quadrilaterals

- collecting and using fractional data

- identifying and visualizing patterns

UNIT 8: Application of Measurement; Computation; Graphing

- synthesis of skills learned during the school year

Expect to have:

* an overview letter for each unit which can be found on the Everyday Math Online link

* study link homework nearly every night (due the following class period)

* journal pages if no study link is assigned for homework (due the following day)

* Unit assessments

* one official district-wide benchmark assessment covering two units

* Math fact practice at home and at school

Games are a great way to reinforce concepts and skills we learn in class.

Please be sure to set up a routine for math homework and math study. All students have a log in for the ConnectEd Resources provided by Everyday Math. Students should regularly use this to practice skills.

Parent involvement plays a big part in student success.
