The Sylvia Fausett Library

Tamaki College's Sylvia Fausett Library has 700+ borrowers and houses more than 11,300 physical books under different sections.

Fiction: 3,118 (Romance: 948) , Non-fiction: 5,068, Graphics: 1,284, Reference: 1,365, Te Wera Nopera Maori Collection: 1,786, High Interest (Did you know):1,786, Quick reads: 1,290, Accelerated Reading Program Books: 1,793 and National Library Books Fiction and N.Fiction (Under Long Term Loan): 1,146.

Apart from physical books; we have more than 2,400 eBooks, Audio-books, Read-Along-Books, and Streaming videos. Tamaki College Library also houses 50 Computers (Macs/HP) for our students to use.

Tamaki students and staff can also access almost 8,000 simultaneous user eBooks from Myon through its website: myon.com 24/7

Students love to use the library for reading, researching, playing Chess during lunchtime and after school.

Class hours are fully booked by teachers for their students to read and work in the library and research on computers.

The Sylvia Fausett Library Tamaki College is rapidly becoming the hub of the school buzzing with activities. It is also used by Senior Leadership Team as the location of choice for all formal meetings and engagements.

Tamaki College Library Policy:

Rationale: The School Library shall have a current, well-stocked, and age-appropriate selection of fiction, non-fiction, graphics, high-interest, quick-reads, reference, magazines, and eBooks. Weeding and stock-taking procedures are to be carried out annually.

Our school library has a central role in helping the school meet its educational goal as outlined in the National Education Priorities and in the Tamaki College Vision.

Purpose: To present an easily accessible library as a vital part of the school. The library provides a range of resources and services to support the curriculum and enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the school. The library assists pupils to acquire the skills and confidence required to retrieve and use information independently. The library helps promote the development of literacy and critical thinking.

The library helps to promote an interest in and enthusiasm for reading for pleasure and encourages the use of external resources from public libraries and also eBooks from our school's 2 digital libraries.

Guidelines: The Library Manager proposes a budget annually to maintain and improve the library. The selection of new books/ eBooks is made with recommendations from staff and also from students. Outdated and shabby books will be weeded annually and replaced with new material. The Library Manager borrows books on behalf of Sylvia Fausett Library Tamaki College from the National Library to assist in reading programs throughout the school.

Students are invited to work as Student Librarians.

Programs and Services: Teachers may book the library or the computer room for a maximum of four periods a day. Priority is given to teachers and students needing to use the library/computer room for curriculum-based work. Teachers must book in their own names and assume responsibility for the students using the library or computer room. The library is open to students during lunchtimes and other times at the discretion of the Library Manager.

Conclusion: Students should leave Tamaki College as life-long learners with developed skills that allow them to undertake independent research. Students should leave Tamaki College as critical thinkers and appreciate the value of reading for pleasure.
