Reading & ELA
Reading is a vital part of our everyday lives. We read labels on our food while picking out breakfast, street & road signs while driving to work and school, TV program guides to decide what to watch, menus at the drive-through and restaurants, emails, caller ID, etc. In order to create better readers, we read for at least 20 minutes in class every day. Students should also be reading at home every night for at least 15 minutes.
We are working with two curriculums this year, Wit & Wisdom and Greek and Latin Roots Vocabulary, based on the latest research in the Science of Reading. We are excited about the content and rigor of these new programs. They are closely aligned with the Ohio 5th-grade standards for ELA. For Wit and Wisdom, we will be reading a few novels:
Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O'Dell
A novel
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
A novel
The Boys’ War: Confederate and Union Soldiers Talk about the Civil War by Jim Murphy
First person historical account
The River Between Us by Richard Peck
