Introduction: A Direction for our Instructional Planning
The dynamic world around us has created a sense of urgency to increase the rigor and relevance of learning opportunities for all our students. A united effort among states throughout our country has led the charge to develop the Common Core Standards for mathematics and English and language arts. Ohio has joined in that effort by working to ratchet up our state’s learning targets using the Common Core Standards as foundation for Ohio’s New Learning Standards, and by revising science and social studies academic content standards. These new standards move Ohio’s K‐12 educational goals beyond tinkering to give our students the opportunity to be college and career ready to succeed in the global economy.
Education for the Real World is Our Business
The South‐Western City School District is answering this call to action now by realigning learning targets in
mathematics, English and language arts, science and social studies. We will meet these changes well within the timeline for change as mandated by state law. Our robust and relevant coursework will provide coherent, focused content and skills for our young people to be fully prepared for success in college and careers. By incorporating these new standards, South‐Western will continue working with teachers, parents and community leaders to communicate a consistent, clear understanding in what all students will be expected to know and do at each grade level.
