Classroom Procedures

Instruction in Academic Intervention Services (AIS) in language arts will center on building the following skills and procedures:

1- Close Reading Procedures

- Students practice annotation and active reading skills while following a series of steps.

2- Reading Comprehension skills

- Students receive explicit instruction to build foundation and application skills. These include:

a- Finding the main idea

b- Finding evidence

c- Understanding the structure of the text

d- Recognizing how an author develops a story or idea.

e- Identifying the author's perspective

f- Recognizing Author's Purpose

3- Writing Skills/Procedures

a- Sentence writing

b- Vocabulary building

c- Paragraph/Essay structure

- Students will practice writing narrative, informative, and persuasive paragraphs and essays.

Students will use online newspaper and magazine articles (with grade level questions to track their progress as well as classroom assignments to practice these skills and steps.

3- Multi-sensory Reading Instruction

When appropriate, students receive direct or incidental instruction on word structure to develop reading fluency and spelling skills using the Wilson Reading System and supplements.
