What is Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) Testing?

Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) occurs when a component is subjected to stress levels high enough to cause microscopic plastic (permanent) deformation during each cycle. Because the damage accumulates rapidly, failure typically occurs in a relatively low number of cycles—usually under 10,000.

Unlike High Cycle Fatigue (which is stress-controlled), LCF testing is strain-controlled. We utilize highly sensitive extensometers to measure and control the exact amount of axial strain the material experiences. The core output of LCF testing is the Strain-Life curve, which is mathematically modeled using the Coffin-Manson relation.
