FAQ:
What's the time commitment like?
The BNVB rehearses once a week (~1 hour) and performs at home football, basketball, and softball games (~3-4 hours). Other playing opportunities for the BNVB include away games, fundraisers for charities on campus, and small group performances; these events come up a few times a semester, but the general time commitment is about 4 hours weekly. That being said, we understand that WashU students are busy, so the BNVB is flexible and does not require members to attend all events.
What are rehearsals like?
Tons of fun! The BNVB plays rock, pop, and funk music that's easy to play and enjoy. Most of rehearsal is spent running through the charts and making them ready for game time situations, and it's unlikely that you'll have to spend too much time practicing on your own. Also, occasionally free food.
What are performances like?
They're tons of fun as well! The BNVB's sole purpose at WashU athletic events is to pump up the crowd and players, so it's pretty hard to not get pumped up ourselves. We play short and long form pieces from the stands during breaks in play, and more ceremonious music such as the national anthem or WashU fight song before/after game time.
Do I need to bring my instrument to campus?
Although the BNVB has some instruments in its inventory, there are usually not enough instruments to meet demand. As such, we ask that anyone who is able to bring their instrument to campus do so. The BNVB does have a full drum line and sousaphones; we would not expect students to bring these instruments to campus, and we are working on securing funding for additional instruments of this nature to be added to our inventory.
