How often can students visit the library?
Maintaining a flexible or open schedule in the Information Center is a DoDEA best practice. According to this idea, the library program is an extension of the classroom. Information skills are no longer presented in isolation but are taught within the context of the classroom curriculum. Students and teachers must be able to come to the information center throughout the day to use information sources, to read for pleasure, and to meet and work with other students and teachers. Classes may need to come every day for a week and then more infrequently for the next three weeks afterward. Planning between the Information Specialist and the classroom teacher, during both scheduled and informal sessions, is the catalyst that makes this integrated library program work.
Flexible access and scheduling encourage the creation of life-long learners, readers and library users. Individual students, small groups, and classes use the library when they need information, as an extension of their learning or to pursue a personal learning goal. Teachers may send small groups to visit the library as part of their center time or may schedule a time with the information specialist to stop by as a whole group. Students in Sure Start and kindergarten visit the library on a weekly basis for a story time and to check out books.
Students may visit the library during lunch recess with a pass from their teacher.
What do I do if I think that I lost a book?
If you think that you have lost a book, please contact Mrs. Russo via email at margaret.russo@dodea.edu.

Can parents visit the library?
Yes, parents are encouraged to visit the library to check out books for their child, to learn more about our online databases and resources, and to speak with Mrs. Russo about the independent reading program at our school. Please be sure to check in in the front office before coming to the library.
How can I volunteer in the library?
Volunteers are an integral part of the library program and are always welcome! You can volunteer on a drop-in basis, or you can commit to volunteering one morning or afternoon per week. Volunteers assist with shelving, checking books in and out, and other special projects.
What is the mission of the Information Center?
The Information Center program is based on the belief that reading and research are fundamental to successful, life-long learning. Within the walls of the information center, students, teachers, and community members can discover a wealth of information about subject areas, recreational interests and “real world” topics. The ability to access this information is defined as “information literacy” and is the key to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
The Information Center will:
-provide opportunities for students to become life-long learners who can independently access, evaluate, and use information.
-promote literacy and help students develop a love of reading.
-provide instruction in the use of information technology and search strategies.
-extend the classroom curriculum through an educational partnership between teachers and the information specialist.
-utilize current technology and services to assist students in becoming proficient users of information.
