How to practice:

1. Set up a routine time and place to play.

2. Select a very small goal--a few measures, a little section, or a few notes that are difficult

3. Repeat that section over and over and over until it is easy for you to play.

4. Practice only the hard parts, not the parts that are easy.

Below is a practice checklist for you to follow:

1. Posture: Sitting properly is critical. Musicians should sit at the edge of the chair with both feet flat on the floor.

2. Long tones: Professional musicians begin their day with long tones. There is no other activity that does as much for developing the breath, the embouchure (how the mouth holds the instrument), and the tone. 5-10 minutes of long tones will greatly benefit all students. Review the fingering and name of the notes we have learned in class.

3. Scales: If you have already learned a scale, either the 5-note or full scale, then you should play through it 2-3 times, focusing on smooth finger action and an even sound.

4. Songs: If you know enough notes to play a song, practice that song or try to create a song with the notes that you know.
