5th Grade English and Social Studies Syllabus

We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to the
St. Peter School community, especially to the families of our fifth grade
students. As a part of our effort to ensure effective communication, the
following fifth grade syllabus will provide you with the goals, objectives, and
expectations as adopted by the Diocese of Cleveland and the State of Ohio.
We look forward to a positive, productive year with students and parents!
Evaluation of Student Progress
The students will be assessed through quizzes, observations, class discussions, projects, and chapter tests. Multiple choice, short answer, discussion, and open-ended questions are used.
Grading Scale
Per St. Peter School policy, fifth grade uses the following grading scale:
93 – 100 A
85 - 90 B
77 - 82 C
70 – 75 D
69 – below F
Progress Reports will be sent home according to the school calendar.
Grading Procedures
● English and social studies averages are composed of a minimum of 10 grades per quarter.
Communications with Parents
Please frequently check my Google Classroom for updates on homework and tests.
In order to access a student's grades parents will need to log on to the parent portal. Grades will be updated in the parent portal after tests have been graded.
Student agendas will be provided which may also be used as a means of correspondence between home and school.
Homework Policy
Students will complete the assignment within the allotted time frame for a completion grade.
Absent/Make-up Work
Students will have the number of days equal to the number of days absent to complete make-up assignments.

PBIS Reward System
Students will earn flash cash throughout the school day for being respective, showing good behavior, random acts of kindness, being helpful, and more! Flash cash can be used to “buy” various prizes and rewards
Behaviors That Are Inappropriate in the Classroom and Hallway
Do not interrupt the teacher. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.
Stay seated! If you need something/need to go somewhere raise your hand.
If you need to use the restroom raise your hand (Hand signals) and wait for permission to leave. You will need to sign out/in before and after going to the bathroom.
Change of Transportation (Home)
Please call the office with any last minute change of transportation requests as I do not check my email while I am teaching.
Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines
Morning- Students are to enter the room quietly and organize their materials for class sessions. They are to complete the morning assignment.
Restroom Breaks- Students will have access to restrooms daily. They must sign the signout sheet before leaving the room.
Lunchroom- Students are to enter the cafeteria in a quiet and orderly fashion.
Dismissal- Students are to be packed and ready to go by the designated time.
Drills- In the event of a fire, earthquake, or tornado drill, students will
leave the classroom in an orderly fashion and appropriate procedures will be followed as outlined in the St. Peter School Safety Plan.
*Students will be responsible for completing and turning in their homework on time. You can expect these assignments every week in ELA. This does not mean that there will not be other assignments given.
Weekly homework for Miss Smith’s class:
Spelling words 5 times each on a piece of loose leaf paper due on Wednesdays before the test. I will NOT collect late spelling homework after the test. Students will be tested on these spelling words every Wednesday (unless stated otherwise on Google Classroom)
Students must write out their 8 vocabulary words on flash cards. These terms will be found at the bottom of their weekly spelling word list. Miss Smith will collect the flashcards on Wednesday (the day of the vocabulary quiz)I will NOT collect late vocab homework after the test.
Journal entries will be due every Friday. The writing prompts will be posted on Google Classroom if students lose their physical copies.
