Winstone's Mt Wellington Quarry opened in the basalt lava field, about 5 kilometers from the center of Auckland City, in 1936. It has been the main source of supply of aggregate for the City and Region and thus an important factor in the building of modem Auckland. People now use the rocks from the quarry. The rocks that they got from the quarry were used to pave most of the streets in Auckland. They turned the rocks into asphalt and concrete.
After a long time, the people working in the quarry ran out of rocks to dig up. Then the quarry was closed down. It closed down in 2001, 65 years after it had opened.
