Summarizing

Summarizing text is a very important skill to learn in 5th grade. From knowing main ideas in social studies and science, to writing 5 paragraph essays on the Mayan civilization, Energy, or the California Missions, 5th graders are constantly reinforcing the skill of summarizing. The 10% summary is one of the first tools I use to teach the students how to pair down information and find main ideas.
