Choir students should have previous experience in choir in order to enroll in Pioneer Chorale. Concert Choir requires a private, individual audition. Those auditions typically occur in April / May of the previous academic year. Both choirs are a year long (two semester) commitment. There is no prerequisite for Music Appreciation classes.

Choir classes:

Choir classes allow students to perform large quantities of choral / vocal music. The emphasis is on vocal production and literature. There will be basic elements of sight reading and history included. Students should strive for good vocal production and an understanding of how their body functions as a "human instrument". Students will understand some historical context of the music being performed. Students will continually work toward discipline in learning repertoire and the ability to work as an ensemble. Choir music will be made available through the school, either as printed octavos or on-line. Choir binders are available in class or students may provide their own personal 3-ring binder to keep their music in the choir room. Deadlines for memory work and any additional pertinent information regarding choir performances, fundraisers, rehearsals, etc, will be posted in the choir room.

Please note: Concerts and concert dress rehearsals are required elements of the class and function as the final exam for choir so cannot be missed or made-up.

Music Appreciation classes:

Music Appreciation classes are focused on the music listening preferences of individual students. Students will work toward an ability to articulate specifically the reasons for these preferences. Coursework will include elements of research, discussion, quizzes, presentations and music projects in coordination with other members of the class. The Music Appreciation textbook (Music! It's Role and Importance In Our Lives) will be made available for checkout through the SHS library. Students are required to provide their own writing utensils (pens or pencils) and paper. Some additional materials (posterboard, note cards, etc.) will be required as projects are assigned.

Additional information is provided via the site list under specific class syllabi.
