Sometimes, the question arises as to how children are graded in music class. I wanted to break this down for everyone in case there are any questions in the future.
- Behavior and Participation: To me, this is one of the most important grades. It also can be an easy '4' for all students as long as they are not disrupting class, calling out, disturbing others, and are participating when they can during the class period. I give each student in grades 4-8 a DAILY behavior and participation grade which I calculate together at the end of each trimester. IF A STUDENT RECEIVES THREE "2s" OR "1s" IN ANY TRIMESTER, THEY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR HONORS.
- Projects: The students will be graded individually and/or as a group when they complete projects and bring them into class. Sometimes, we work on projects during class as well so I will be able to grade them individually or as a group.
- Singing Participation: The most important factor of singing participation is that the students TRY. Especially during the first half of the year when we are rehearsing every day for the Christmas Show, I need all students to be constantly pushing themselves and trying their best to learn the songs with their class and sing together. Of course, I am not looking for the students to be perfect and always singing exactly the right notes all the time. To me, the EFFORT is the most important factor.
- Presentations and Performances: Many times, the students will work together on a performance on non-pitched percussion instruments, movement, boomwhackers, or even singing. They then will perform them either a few weeks after working on it or that class period if it is a short assignment. Once again, the most important factor is that the students do their best and try to help their group or work on their own to the best of their ability.
