What does the elementary counselor do?
I teach in each classroom on topics such as self esteem, decision making, problem solving, conflict resolution, friendship, and communication skills. I also assist with anti-drug education, child development, anti-bullying and safety information. I am also available to help with study skills.
Do you have small groups?
Yes, I meet with small groups of students as needed for usually 6-8 sessions. We work on conflict resolution, problem-solving, making friends and coping with stressful situations. Students like Group and usually ask to come back again.
What is G.I.R.L.S?
It is an optional girls group for girls in 4th or 5th grade that meets for 8 sessions every other week. We discuss self-esteem, frenemies, cliques, and many other situations that a young girl may encounter. *3rd Grade G.I.R.L.S Group will occur in the Spring
Do you see individual students?
Yes, I see students who are upset, sad, or angry right away. We work on problem-solving, identifying feelings, and making choices. We may see each other for a follow-up visit. Sometimes parents or teachers ask me to see students for a few visits to work on a particular issue and I try to see the students several times during the year to watch for improvement.
What do you do for parents?
Parent conferences and consultations are an important part of my job. So, if you have specific concerns about your child which may impact their school success, please give a call to set up an appointment. I am here each day from 7:15-3:45 and can be reached at 972-350-1306. I do not answer the phone when I am with a student or classes, so please leave me a voicemail.
