Tips to support your child's science learning

-Value your child's questions. Explore and find the answers together.

-Give your child time and space to explore. Accept that explorations are often messy.

-Learn from mistakes together.

-Invite curiosity. Support further exploration.

-Encourage your child to record their observations.

-Use items you have at home to experiment and explore.

Help your child improve their fine motor skill development

-Roll Play-Doh into balls - using the palms of the hands facing each other and with fingers curled slightly towards the palm.

-Roll Play-Doh into tiny balls (peas) using only the fingertips.

-Use tweezers to pick up objects (Cheerios, beads, marshmallows, pennies, etc.).

-Use lacing and sewing activities such as stringing beads, Cheerios, macaroni, etc.

-Use eye droppers to "pick up" colored water for color mixing or to make designs on paper.

-Cut up junk mail or magazine subscription cards.

-Cut Play-Doh with scissors.

-Encourage reaching across the body for materials with each hand. It may be necessary to engage the other hand in an activity to prevent switching hands at midline.

-When painting at an easel, encourage your child to paint a continuous line across the entire paper. Then also one from diagonal to diagonal.

-Play "Connect the Dots". Make sure your child's strokes go from left to right and from top to bottom.
