Our Junior High Math Program
Our middle school mathematics program combines a rigorous core curriculum with opportunities for individualized practice and skill development. Students in Grades 6–8 use the Reveal Math Course 1–3 sequence, while students enrolled in Algebra 1 use Glencoe Algebra 1. Throughout the program, we also use IXL Math to provide targeted practice, review, and reinforcement of essential skills.
Our goal is not simply for students to get the right answer, but for them to understand the mathematics, explain their thinking, solve problems independently, and develop confidence as mathematicians.

Assessments are graded by standards based on the following rubric:
IXL Expectations (Per Trimester)
IXL is a required part of our math program and is used to support individualized learning based on each student’s STAR assessment data.
Students are expected to complete assigned IXL skills based on the skill set assigned by the teacher, aligned with their STAR and IXL Plan. Skill work may include:
Numbers & Operations
Algebra
Geometry & Measurement
Data Analysis, Statistics & Probability
A SmartScore of 100 is considered complete (no written work required), while a SmartScore of 70 is the minimum requirement and must include 10 written problems with work shown in the student’s IXL notebook.
Consistent effort and progress on IXL are essential for building strong mathematical foundations and supporting success in class.
How is math differentiated for students within a grade level?
Students master math concepts at different speeds, so it is our job to meet them where they are and challenge them to be as successful as possible. We use a variety of tools and strategies to support and challenge our students, and are always brainstorming new ideas. Two tools that we use often are IXL, and REVEAL MATH All students have access to both programs through their school CLEVER account and their teacher can login and assign various lessons for the student to practice. Remedial lessons can be assigned to students needing extra support, standards-based, grade level lessons can be assigned to students needing extra practice on a current topic and higher (grade) level lessons can be assigned to students that want to challenge themselves beyond the grade-level expectations. We also write specific learning contracts for students that need more individualized support (be it remediation or acceleration).
Your student can access the IXL, Khan Academy and McGraw-Hill programs through their school single-sign on CLEVER account.
What can parents do to help their students with studying and preparing for a math test?
A very important component to math is correcting homework, quizzes and tests by showing all the new work in detail. For quizzes and tests, that means use a fresh piece of paper and a red pen. Correcting mistakes helps with long term retention and concept depth, and builds great discipline in patience and thoroughness. Doing corrections and then reviewing them is a great way to prepare for a test.
Other test prep strategies:
Drill skill parent guide problems on textbook website ( Go to your student's text book, click on student support and look for Parent Guide w/ Extra Practice tab at the top)
Closure problems at the end of each chapter
Review vocabulary and math notes
Check that your student is keeping an organized notebook
Review all quizzes and homework
Encourage your student to meet with the math teacher during collaboration or lunch to go over questions
IXL, Khan Academy or Mathletics (type in the concepts that will be on the test in the search bars and then do problems in that domain)
What can parents do to support their student's math development?
At the bottom of this page you will find a pdf labeled "Advice to Parents..." that can be used as a great resource from Stanford University explaining best practices for parents to support their students in math. We also recommend talking to your students about math. Ask them what they are learning. Ask them to explain the process they are learning. Why does it work? Albert Einstein said it best when he said, "If you can't explain it you don't understand it well enough."
