My dissertation investigated the optimum design of prestressed concrete girders. The study was completely theoretical; however it contained practical reasoning based on manuals of practice and it is concluded that minimum weight leads to minimum cost in prestressed concrete construction. The study was quite challenging for me, although I had some background in prestressed concrete, because I had no idea about the subject of Optimisation. Thus, it gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and develop my knowledge further by exploring new concepts and ideas and at the same time undertake a theoretical study.

This was 5 people teamwork to theoretically redesign the geometry of a collector road in the area of Sulaimani. The aim was to compare between the actual design under construction and the new theoretical redesign. The study helped to develop teamwork skills, learn the operation of new surveying equipment, such as Total Stations, and to develop more CAD programme skills using Autodesk Land Development software suite. The study concluded that the actual design compared well to the theoretical design.
