Welcome to AP Government
United States Government, AP is a one semester introductory course to the nature of American politics and government. One of the most important goals of the course is to introduce students to the fundamental issues of governmental structures and political behavior as it appears in the American context. In spite of the fact that it is not required, a secondary goal of the course is to help prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination administered every year in May. Both goals will be enhanced with a rigorous program of analytical reading, writing, and research. Although there will be occasional lectures, the bulk of the course will take the form of class discussions over assigned readings. It is imperative that these readings be done prior to class time. AP Government, thus, assumes a high degree of student motivation and skill. Please register with the College Board at: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/home?navid=gh-aps to receive exam date information, review materials and access to exam scores. The AP Government Exam is May 10th.
Our course meets on Tuesdays and Fridays for 92 minutes each day. Because of the extensive breadth of information and concepts, students will be required to complete many of the assignments and readings outside of class. It is important that students attend my office hours after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:15 pm for tutorials, cooperative group projects, exams and test corrections.
Students are required to read the textbook: "Government in America, AP Ed 2014 Election Ed 16e by George Edwards ." The textbook is available online to access the online textbook register with www.PearsonMyLab.com. Follow the online the registration directions from Pearson available from the course syllabus. Students need to check out the textbook from the Professional Tower/Academy Principal, Ms. Haase.
