Necessary Band Accessories

Greetings Parents, Below you will find the books your child will need for their lessons. Also, you will find the recommended accessories for specific instruments. Please have the book by October 11. You can order online with Music and Arts at:http://www.musicarts.com If you order online, the book and supplies that you need and they will deliver the book to the Middle School, or you can go to any local music store to purchase the book.

Please note that all students need the following:

• • An instrument

  • A lesson book. Please see the chart below to know which book to purchase.

  • A 3-ring binder and plastic sheet protectors

  • Pencils

  • A SmartMusic subscription is provided for all students

Here are some accessories I would recommend for your child's instrument:

Woodwinds:

• • For reed instruments: Rico Royal or VanDoren Reeds. Most students will be using either a 2 1/2 or a 3 reed. The size will depend on the student. Also, students should have several working reeds at all times and all old reeds should be changed occasionally. Broken reeds should be changed immediately.

  • Cork Grease (to keep the cork joints lubricated)

  • Mouthpiece brush (to clean mouthpiece)

  • Swab (To keep the inside of the instrument clean.)

  • Reed Guard: to store reeds when not in use.

  • Thumb saver (For Clarinets or Oboes)

  • All Saxophones should have a neck strap.

  • A small container to keep in their case to soak reeds in water rather than in the student's mouth.

  • Metronome

Brass:

• • Valve Oil (Slide-o-mix for Trombones) To lubricate slides

  • Slide Grease or Cork Grease: To keep slides lubricated

  • Mouthpiece brush (to clean mouthpiece)

  • Snake: to clean the inside of the instrument.

  • Metronome

Percussion:

• • Drumsticks, preferably 5A, 5B, or Vic Firth General or Bolero.

  • Practice Pad

  • Metronome
