Hello! My name is Amber Kopmann (she/her) and I am a born and raised Sparta Spartan! I couldn’t be more excited or happier to come home to my roots and begin my career as an English teacher at Sparta High. Following high school, I earned two B.A. degrees from Rutgers University; a degree in journalism& media studies and comparative literature.
Following my undergraduate work, I was off to work in the Big Apple. I began as an editorial intern at Maxim and then I became an intern-turned-freelance editorial assistant at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Spending two years in this environment, I realized it wasn’t really where my heart was pulling me.
Luckily, I got the opportunity to come back to Sparta to coach girls’ lacrosse and that was the sign I needed to realize what I was meant to do. After a few years as the program’s JV coach, I decided to go back to school to earn my teaching certificate. In May 2015, I earned my Master in the Arts in Teaching degree from Drew University and was fortunate enough to join the educating team at Sparta High.
My goal in all of my classes this year is to reignite the students’ abilities and potential to innovate, collaborate, and get lost in the written word. So much of our culture and society has to do with literary competence, in addition to critical thinking and writing. I have found that teenagers struggle with the relevance of their education, “why do I need to know this?” It is my goal, not only to answer that question, but to encourage them to ask more questions and seek the answers themselves.
