Curriculum

This year we will study Physical Science.

Physical Science is the study of matter.

It includes:

The structure and properties of matter and how matter changes

AND

The effect of forces on matter and energy changes.

In addition, 8th grade physical science also includes several fundamental science units.

Safety

In this unit, students will learn about the laboratory and safety equipment found in our classroom.

Students will learn how to safely use all of this equipment and be responsible for properly using this equipment throughout the year.

Measurement

In this unit, students will learn about the metric system and how to convert from one unit to another within the metric system. Students will also learn how to measure length, mass and volume of various items using metric rulers, meter sticks, digital balances and graduated cylinders.

Students will be required to measure all data collected during experiments using the metric system.

Experimental Design

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to design a complete, fair and conclusive laboratory experiment. They will use a scientific question to formulate the purpose of an experiment. Variables will be identified and a formal hypothesis written. A precise and accurate method will be written along with a comprehensive list of materials used. During the experiment, data will be collected and displayed in a proper data table. Students will analyze their data using computations and graphs. Conclusions about their hypothesis will be formed using data from the experiment as evidence.
