This 7th grade hybrid course is a combination of United States History from the acceptance of the US Constitution all the way through to the US Civil War. Along the way, important civics concepts and citizen participation will focus on various ways citizens contribute to framing and supporting the US government. Activities that will enhance this part of the curriculum include iCivics games on the election process, how bills become laws, the role of the Executive Branch and what it might be like to be President as well as how the Supreme Court decisions on controversial issues impact citizens lives. The course also allows students to explore the electoral college, a simulated mock congress and scenarios that investigate the rights of all Americans. For US History, students will explore 5 major Presidencies (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson and Lincoln). In addition, major American achievements and accomplishments as well as turbulent times will be analyzed using both primary and secondary sources, in depth writing tasks, and through documentary films. A variety of best teaching practices will maximize the ways students can demonstrate their learning on these topics including simulations, writing and reading activities, projects and many others.
