The central goal of SPA's college counseling process is to help each student find a college that meets their academic and personal goals. Beyond the concrete task of finding a college that is a good fit, the college counseling process is designed to help students cultivate self-reflection, critical thinking, communication, self-advocacy and decision-making skills--skills that will be vital for their success in college and in life. Throughout the year, we stay in contact with college admissions officers across the country. We familiarize them with SPA's program, advocate on behalf of our students, and invite them to visit SPA. Each year, the College Counseling Office also updates an important document called the School Profile. Designed primarily to encapsulate SPA's program for college admissions officers, it is always attached to student transcripts during the college application process. Many community members also appreciate the information it provides.Â
In addition to the many other resources we offer, we designed this handbook to be a useful tool for students and families. It provides an overview of our program; an outline of the roles and responsibilities of students, families, and the college counselor; and a guide to major parts of the search and application processes. Seniors will be provided with one hard copy each, but an updated digital version will always be available here. Additionally, students and families should always refer to college counseling communications and the website for specific dates, deadlines, and forms.
