of the

South Range High School Chapter

of the

National Honor Society

Article I

Name and Purpose

Section I The name of the chapter shall be the South Range Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, which appears on the charter granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by the members of the National Council.

Section II The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of South Range High School.

Article II

Membership

Section I Membership in this chapter shall be based upon Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

Section II Candidates shall have spent at least one semester at South Range High School, and shall be members of the junior or senior class. Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be for this chapter the required level for candidacy for membership in this chapter. All students who meet or exceed this standard shall be considered as candidates based on their Service, Leadership, and Character.

Article III

Election of Members

Section I After their fifth or seventh semesters, all Juniors and Seniors who meet the academic requirement (a minimum GPA of 3.5) shall be given a candidate packet to complete. Students who return a completed packet by the given deadline shall be rated by the faculty on a scale from 0-5 (with 5 being the highest score) in the areas of Service, Leadership, and Character. A minimum of seven faculty members shall rate each candidate. After the highest and lowest ratings are discarded, the average of all scores in each category will be taken. Candidates with an average in each category of 3.0 or greater and a total score of 11.0 or greater shall be voted on by the NHS Faculty Council. Candidates who receive a majority vote of the council (3-2 or greater) shall be admitted into the local chapter.

Section II Any member whose grades fall below the academic standard shall be placed on probation. If during any subsequent marking period the member fails to meet this standard, he shall be dismissed. A National Honor Society member must maintain the academic standard to retain his membership. Once a member is dismissed from membership, he is never again eligible for membership in the National Honor Society.

Section III When a member is dismissed, he will be notified in writing. He shall then return all emblems and documentation of membership to the advisor or high school principal. Notice of such action must be stated in the annual report to the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the governing body of the National Honor Society.

Section IV An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to South Range High School will be automatically accepted for membership in the local chapter. All transfer members must maintain the membership requirements for this chapter in order to retain his membership.

Section V Prior to selection for induction into the local chapter, all candidates and a parent or guardian shall agree to abide by the NHS Code of Conduct of the local chapter. Furthermore, each candidate and his parent or guardian agree that their signatures shall be considered affirmation of this stipulation in regard to compliance with the code of conduct.

Article IV

Section I The officers of this chapter shall be a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Section II A majority of votes cast shall be necessary to elect any officer of the chapter.

Code of Conduct:

National Honor Society

of

South Range High School

Code of Conduct

Membership in the National Honor Society is a privilege. You have earned this privilege by demonstrating outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character. In reciting the NHS oath you pledge to remain loyal to the organization, to promote and participate in school activities, to serve as a role model to your peers at all times (including outside of the school day), and to “uphold the high purpose of this Society”. In other words, you must continue to demonstrate the standards upon which your selection was based. Failure to maintain these standards may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the NHS. Once members are dismissed, they are never again eligible to be reinstated. The purpose of this document is to outline the policies and procedures followed when disciplinary action is deemed necessary.

  • Academic Probation: NHS members whose academic performance fall below the standard of a 3.2 grade point average will be placed on academic probation for the next grading period. You will be informed in writing by the advisor. A second violation will result in dismissal.

  • Disciplinary Action: NHS members whose behavior in school or outside of school warrant disciplinary action will be informed in writing by the advisor. Any disciplinary action taken is based on a majority decision by the NHS Faculty Council, a body of five teachers selected at the beginning of each school year. A hearing will be held for the member with the NHS Faculty Council and the advisor present. Parents are encouraged to attend any such hearing. The NHS Faculty Council may issue any appropriate disciplinary measures including dismissal from the National Honor Society. Dismissal from the NHS is permanent.

  • Appeals of Disciplinary Action: NHS members may appeal any disciplinary action taken by the NHS Faculty Council to the principal. The decision of the principal is final. Please refer to the Student Handbook regarding appeals of disciplinary action.

  • Major Offenses and Possible Consequences: The following is a list of unacceptable student behavior. It is not meant to be inclusive. Each student’s actions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

    • Recommendation for Dismissal: The NHS Advisor will recommend dismissal for level I offenses as defined in the South Range High School Student Handbook. These include Chemical Abuse (alcohol and illegal drugs other than tobacco), Possession of a Dangerous Weapon, Criminal Assault, Vandalism in excess of $100.00, and Inducing Panic. In addition to these offenses, the advisor will recommend dismissal for any criminal offenses committed outside of the school day. The Advisor may also recommend dismissal for certain level II and level III offenses. These include: Fighting/Assault (Physical and/or Verbal Menacing), Verbal Assault, Forgery, Cheating, Theft, Endangering the Safety of Staff and/or of Students, Disruption of the Orderly School Process, Sexual Harassment, and Repeated Violations.

    • Recommendation for Disciplinary Action: When an offense does not merit a recommendation for dismissal, the NHS Advisor will recommend disciplinary action for level II, III, and IV offenses. In addition to those offenses listed in the previous paragraph, these include: Failure to Attend Saturday School, Excessive Saturday School Assignments, Insubordination, Use of Tobacco Products, Vandalism less than $100.00, Use of Profanity and/or Obscene Language, Excessive Detentions, Truancy, and Leaving School without Permission. NHS Members who do not meet the service requirements (participation in all club service projects and fundraisers, attending all NHS meetings, and participation in one service project outside of NHS) may also be subject to disciplinary action.

  • Student and Parent Signatures

I have read and understand this Code of Conduct. I agree to abide by this Code of Conduct or be subject to reasonable disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the National Honor Society.
