2023 Global Seminar – African Wildlife Conservation & Health in Namibia

An immersive lecture and field based course designed to examine conservation and health of Namibian wildlife. Students will travel to Namibia for approximately 2 weeks to visit national parks, private game reserves, biomedical, educational, and conservation facilities. Students will participate in a pre-departure course that will introduce pertinent organismal concepts such as: animal behavior, ecology, evolution, field techniques, management, and taxonomy. The pre-departure course will also introduce biomedical concepts pertinent to veterinary medicine including: animal welfare, chemical immobilization, pathology, rehabilitation, wildlife and zoonotic diseases. Furthermore, students will explore the human component of Namibian wildlife conservation. Students will examine the way in which diverse Namibian cultures, religions, and ideologies have shaped policies, economics, and human-wildlife interactions.
BIOL 170: African Biodiversity and Conservation - Suitable for non-majors of all class standing. Biology majors should consult with the instructor for options to satisfy program requirements (Core: Physical & Natural World).
BIOL 389: African Wildlife Conservation and Health - Suitable for upper level Biology-Biomedical, Biology-Organismal, Environmental Science, and Natural Science majors (Core: Beyond Borders Advanced Core Course).
