[I'm trying something new for Midterm 3. One of the goals of this course is that students have the opportunity to learn and improve. Therefore, I'm shaping the grading on Midterm 3 to reflect that goal.]
I will not curve Midterm 3. However, students have two methods improve their scores.
Any student can earn up to half the points lost for each problem on the exam by doing the following:
Complete the Dynamics Exam Wrapper. You only need to do this once, not once per problem.
For each problem where you want points back:
Write out your first solution to the problem (pictures/photocopies are okay). Indicate the point where your approach went wrong.
Write out the complete correct solution. [Note that a correct solution that is merely a copy of the homework problem and/or the crowdsourced solution (see below) will not earn points.]
Please indicate the reason/reasons why you think you lost points
Trouble with vectors and vector notation
Algebra or arithmetic errors
Problem with free-body diagrams
Lack of understanding of the concept
Not knowing how to apply the concepts to this particular problem
Careless mistakes
Other (please specify)
You must turn this all in by the start of the Final Exam (noon on 12/16). For those who are taking the final early, you still can wait until the 16th, though obviously you'll benefit most from doing this work before the final!
Any student who posts the correct solutions to the exam in the comments (below) has the opportunity to gain bonus points. Some quick caveats:
Each student can only get bonus points for a single problem. So there's no benefit to posting more than one answer (other than helping your fellow students).
The first person to post the correct solution gets the points. I will be the one deciding on correctness (and will indicate the correct answers).
To post a "correct" solution, please indicate which problem you're solving. What you need to do depends on the problem solved:
For worked problems, the "correct" solution solves all parts of the problem all the way to the end, including figures, governing equations, the final answer and units.
For true/false problems, the "correct" solution explains why the answer is correct, and also explains why the other option(s) are not correct.
For Midterm 3, the bonus points are as follows
Problem 1 [Ball with external force]: 1 bonus pt
Problem 2 [Rigid body planar motion]: 1 bonus pt
Problem 3 [Spinning wheel]: 1 bonus pt
Problem 4 [Is ω the same?]: 1 bonus pt
Problem 5 [Spinning disks and friction]: 2 bonus pts
Problem 6 [Cylinder and Spring - HINT: Homework problem 18-25]: 3 bonus pts
Also, a correction: the displacement should be 90 mm to the left.
Problem 7 [Bullet and Disk - HINT: Homework problem 19-30, only easier]: 3 bonus pts
Problem 8 [Ring with Backspin - HINT: Homework problem 17-120]: 3 bonus pts
Note that Midterm 3 had two (slightly) different versions. You only need to submit the solutions to your exam (but I will not be giving bonus points for each version, just the first submitted).
