Saint Louis University is an urban university in midtown of the independent city of St. Louis. The largest group if city residents (46.%) self-reports as being Black or African American alone, and while those who self-report as White alone represent a large fraction of city inhabitants (43.6%), there is also representation from those identifying as Hispanic or Latino, those who report being from two or more groups, and those who identify as Asian alone, members of American Indian and/or Alaska Native groups. Neighboring St. Louis County (which is separate from the City of St. Louis) is home to Ferguson, Missouri. A former PhD student in the lab, who himself is from the Ferguson/Florissant area, had led science outreach activities in a FergFlo elementary school just months before the school district shut down amid protests after Michael Brown's death in Ferguson.
