Washington University Summer Research Programs
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) - sponsored by the National Science Foundation, these are unique opportunities to gain research experiences at outside institutions during the summer. Typically, when you are accepted into an REU you will live on site at the institution and get paid.
Things to keep in mind:
To apply to an REU, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident
Applications for the summer typically open 6-8 months ahead of time (e.g., November or early December) and close in January or February
Many programs prefer to select students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies, but that's not always true. If you have only completed one year of college and would like to apply, you should!
You do not need to have previous research experience to apply.
Programs are available in a wide variety of topics, including Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and STEM Education
Internship listings from other schools:
Swarthmore College maintains a very thorough list of undergraduate research opportunities on their website, sorted by state.
The University of Illinois also has a very extensive list.
