4th Grade ~ Please continue to practice drawing close-up and even abstract versions of flowers. Our artist of study once again is Georgia O'Keeffe. I know some of you have worked on flowers for a while now and you may wish to change things up this week… O’Keeffe added skulls in a lot of her later works. Try your hand at a classic animal skull using basic shapes as fondations to get started.
If you’ve worked on flowers and skulls at this point why not move on to western landscapes. To get started, draw a horizon line across a sheet of paper. Gradually add mountains and clouds above the line and cactus below. Remember perspective and although cactus will start below the line they will stretch above the line as they reach to the sky and that precious sunlight! Check out this reference picture for some inspiration!

Dear Students and Parents,
As we begin week 2, I realize we do not all share the same abilities and access to materials at home. Having that said, I would still like to emphasize how important it is to do what we can, create when we can and practice as much as possible. The video's below are intended to not only reinforce concepts from class but also allow for many of us to continue in this year's plant based themes.
However, art can also be a very expressive time to relieve tension and stress. To relax and create is truly one of the finest parts of fine art! You can follow the example below and make a sketch pad or you can just draw on random paper as I did in my youth. We live in an age when we can often take digital photos of our work to share with others and preserve our creations. Visual Arts do not simply show up on paper either. Just yesterday my son wanted a banana specifically on a plate. I thought that’s perfect, I don’t have to worry about the germs on the peel. As I put the banana on the plate I was reminded how much the banana looks like a dolphin… and the next thing you know I’m creating a banana sculpture!
This week I will post information of how I would like each of my classes to progress but I surely understand the limitations. I ask that you reach out to me with any and all questions via e-mail to kforbes@slheights.org and I will respond asap! And please share your creations no matter what they are, either with me directly or posted to our various school social media.
Thank you! I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in tomorrow’s automobile parade.

Remember how we drew lines over our ice cream soda project in class and we were using various colored markers in each section of the work? Check out and advanced version of the project below. Using the same swirling line technique we used in class try making one of these at home. If you would like an extra challenge, see if you can shade the colors from light to dark as the example below shows. I would recommend crayons of colored pencils for this effect.
