Nicholas Steele - Director of Track and Field - Jumps
Coach Steele is entering his 3rd year as the Director of Track and Field for San Luis Obispo High School. He is a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach who is entering his 12th year coaching, the last Nine with SLOHS, and has specialized in the High, Triple, and Long Jumps. Since 2014, he has helped a total of 67 athletes qualify to the CIF section meet, with 7 athletes winning individual CIF section titles in their individual events, and helping qualify 4 athletes onto the CIF State Meet. Over his career he has been on the coaching staff of 11 league title and 4 section title winning teams. He is extremely grateful to be leading the largest Track and Field Program on the Central Coast and for all the amazing athletes he has been able to coach over the years. Outside of Track, he is a Vineyard Manager in Paso Robles and lives in Atascadero with his dog, Sparky.
Dave Gomes - Girls Head Coach - Hurdles
Dave Gomes is originally from Salinas, Ca. Coach Gomes is a USATF level 1 certified coach and has coached track & field for the past 20+ years. He was an assistant coach with Steve Boaz during the 2003 CIF State & CIF SS boys' XC championship team as well as being head coach of the 2009 CIF SS girls' track & field championship team. He also coaches youth sports such as YMCA basketball, FNL flag football and Cal Ripken baseball for his two sons Jace and Tyce. His wife Sylvia has been extremely supportive of the coaching commitment over the years. As a family they enjoy snow skiing, sports, and road trips. Coach Gomes is excited to be a part of this amazing track & field program.
Bryan Krill - Boys Head Coach - Sprints
Coach Krill is originally from Thousand Oaks, CA. He has coached sprinters at the High School, Junior College, Collegiate and Club levels over the last 30 years. Coach Krill is a level I and level II USATF Youth certified coach. In 1995, he was the captain of the nationally ranked USC Track & Field team. In 1996, he was a quarterfinalist in the 200m at the USA Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Georgia and was twice ranked in the top 50 in the world and the top 20 in the United States in the 200 & 400 meters. In 2010, he was inducted into the second annual USC-UCLA Dual Track Meet Hall of Fame.
Nancy Steinmaus - Boys Distance
Nancy earned her M.A. in exercise physiology with a minor in psychology in 1989 at UC Davis. She ran cross country and track and field earning NCAA Div. II All-American honors 3 times. She started coaching cross county while in grad school at UC Davis before moving to San Diego to be the head women’s and men’s cross country and track and field coach at MiraCosta College. While living in San Diego, she raced as a pro du-athlete all over the world and was two-time Pro National Champ and 4th at the world duathlon championships. Nancy moved to San Luis Obispo in 1999 to start a family with spouse Scott. She has coached at Cuesta, the San Luis Distance Club, LAMS, and at SLOHS, coaching both cross country and track and field. She started coaching at SLOHS in 2018. She currently teaches Health, Certified Personal Training Preparation, and fitness classes at Cuesta College.
Dan Berkeland - Girls Distance
Dan Berkeland is a three-time All-American and the 1992 National Champion in the 3000m steeplechase for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he graduated in 1996 with a degree in Architecture. Following graduation, Dan spent a decade living and working in Italy and Sweden before returning to the Central Coast in 2008 with his wife, Caroline, and their newborn daughter, Molly.
In 2011, Dan and Caroline founded The Back Porch Bakery, which has grown to serve wholesale bread to over 200 locations across the Central Coast. Together, they’ve also expanded their family to include three more children.
Dan began his foray into high school coaching in the spring of 2024, assisting with the girls' track distance program. Later that fall, he took on the role of head coach for the girls' cross country team, highlighted by a CIF Championship. Dan has been an enthusiastic member of the Central Coast running community for over 30 years with no plans of retiring.
Joshua Carr - Discus
Josh Carr is originally from Visalia, CA. In college, Josh competed for the Long Beach State Track and Field team. After being brought on to compete in the decathlon, Josh decided to continue his athletic career as a member on the throws team. He was a team captain from 2017-2019 and earned Academic All-American honors in each of his final three seasons. He was also the Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2018, and played a role in Long Beach State's Conference Championship titles in 2015, 2016, and 2019. Immediately following his competitive career, Josh stepped into a role as an assistant coach for Long Beach State in 2020. Now, Josh is excited to be a part of this incredible program, as well as teach Physical Education at Pacheco Elementary School.

Dave Wilson has been a Coach in the San Luis Obispo Area for over 30 years. He enjoys helping all athletes achieve success not only on the track but in Life.
Nathan Pearce - Girls Sprints
Nathan Pearce recently moved to California with his family. He has coached sprints at the youth, middle school, high school, and private levels. In previous years, he coached the three fastest girls in Kansas history. He is USATF Level 1 certified, and he enjoys staying educated on all things related to sports performance. Nathan has also coached football, basketball, and flag football at various levels.

Charlie Pearson - Pole Vault
Charlie is from Burlington, Washington who is entering his second year at Cal Poly studying Kinesiology. He started pole vaulting his freshman year of high school. Outside of his high school seasons he competed with the NorthWest Pole Vault Club under Tim Reilly. He is grateful to be able to be apart of the coaching staff at SLOHS and is looking forward to another successful season.
Adam Basch - Athletic Director & Meet Announcer
Adam Basch is originally from Toledo, Ohio, where he ran Track and Cross Country for the Sylvania Southview High School Cougars. He earned his BA in Philosophy and Creative Writing from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, and his M.Ed. from Ohio University. After teaching in southern Ohio for several years, he moved to San Luis Obispo in 2007 to start teaching and coaching at SLOHS. He is grateful to his family (especially his extremely patient wife Jenni) for organizing life around high school athletics. Coach Basch was Head Coach of the Cross Country Teams from 2018 to 2022 and Track and Field from 2020 to 2023. He has been the Athletic Director at SLO High since 2023.
