Just words is a highly explicit, multi-sensory decoding and spelling program. This intervention systematically and comprehensively instructs students in phonemic awareness and decoding with a focus on decoding and spelling. This group meets for 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
This unit sets the stage for the study of the English language.
Concepts covered:
Review letter names and sounds
Digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, ck) stick together to form one sound
Tapping and blending words with 3 sounds (phoneme segmentation)
Spelling ck sounds at ends of words

Continues to review all previously taught concepts and adds the following:
Consonant blends (for example: st, sk, fl, sw, str, )
Digraph blends (for example: shr-, thr-, -nch)
Closed syllables
Closed syllable exceptions (ind, ost, old, olt, ild)
Blending and segmenting syllables with up to 6 sounds.
Continues to review all previously taught concepts and adds the following:
Bonus letter spelling rule, ff, ll, ss, and sometimes zz
Segmenting and spelling words with bonus letters
Welded sounds: all, am, an, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk
Blending and reading words with welded sounds
Segmenting and spelling words with welded sounds
