"The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson is an award winning mystery story that was published after the author's death. The story setting takes place in a small town in Vermont and deals with themes of Appearance vs. Reality, the Meaning of Tradition, among others.
Things to look for: Symbolism (the story has one of the most debated symbols in all of literature); irony (particularly situational); characterization. Also think about the setting and the meaning of the setting.
