“The purpose of Shell Lake athletics is to enhance the educational goals of the Shell Lake School District by emphasizing the physical, mental, and character development of each athlete.”
This philosophy is the basis of Shell Lake Athletics and the Shell Lake Football Program. To fulfill this purpose statement, the football program will "teach athletes essential traits that are needed to be successful in football and in life."
The Shell Lake football coaches believe that to be successful in football requires growth in the body, mind, and the heart of each athlete. As coaches, our role is to teach the game to the best of our abilities while teaching our athletes the traits that will help them on the field and in life. We want to help create winners off the field, as well as on it.
To fulfill the purpose statement, the following three areas will be emphasized throughout the program:
1) Physical Development (Body) - Teaching Football Fundamentals
2) Mental Development (Mind) - Teaching the Mind of the Athlete
3) Character Development (Heart) - Teaching to Win Within and With Others
Under each of the three major developmental categories, there are “Core Values” that will be emphasized throughout the program. The “Core Values” are the basis of what we are trying to instill in the athletes:
CORE VALUES – SHELL LAKE FOOTBALL
INTEGRITY – doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, being honest, and treating people with respect.
SERVICE – serve others first, be willing to help and give to others, put the team before yourself, be selfless.
DISCIPLINE – self disciplined, putting in the tough work necessary to achieve success, training in the off-season, being prepared to play each week, being willing to do difficult tasks that lead to success.
EFFORT – show consistent effort in practices and games, compete in every drill and every snap, never giving up or giving in despite the odds.
UNITY/BROTHERHOOD – working together toward a common goal, becoming united as a team, caring for and supporting one another, developing close relationships with your teammates.
MENTORSHIP – experienced athletes mentoring their peers throughout the season, helping them to become better football players and people on and off the field, holding teammates accountable and helping others.
POSITIVE – have a positive attitude, maintaining a positive demeanor (outward behavior) and body language, enjoying the game, making memories, and having fun of playing football.
CONFIDENCE – believing that you can get the job done, being confident in yourself and your teammates.
