PMEA Songfest

The Annual PMEA All-Star Songfest

Almost every year several elementary students have been selected to participate in the PMEA All-Star Song Fest, which is a chorus comprised of approximately 200 students from PMEA’s District 10. Students are selected to participate and perform with this honors group as a result of outstanding participation, attitude, achievement, and responsibility in the vocal music classroom.

Each of the participating elementary schools invite a certain number of students based upon the size of the school. Mrs. Bishop and I accompany the students to the all-day festival where they rehearse with a total of approximately 160 other students from both Berks and Lehigh Counties who are participating in the festival. The students then present a spectacular concert in the evening that was is attended by family and friends. These students definitely display the mastering of Standard 9.1.D. : Demonstrating knowledge of musical concepts and styles through performance.

Preparing for the Songfest is not all fun and games though. The students commit to learning the music from memory in only a few weeks. In order to be ready, the singers practice regularly and rigorously at home and they attend rehearsals at their schools. After preparing for this event, these students have a better understanding of Standard 9.1.G. : Identifying the function and benefits of rehearsal and practice sessions. The Songfest is a great opportunity for these young singers to challenge their musical abilities and experience singing in a large choral group. Congratulations to these fifth graders who represented our Wilson School District with pride!

Unfortunately, the date for PMEA Songfest of 2019 conflicted with our Holiday Concert rehearsal schedule.
