FOA Solo & Ensemble

November 6, 2021 • Rockledge High School

Solo & Ensemble (S&E) is an event sponsored by the Florida Orchestra Association District 10 (Brevard County). S&E is an opportunity for individuals and groups of musicians to showcase their talent and hard work. To maintain a high level of excellence, FOA District 10 invites in professional adjudication from outside of Brevard County to assess and provide feedback for students to continue their musical development.

Participation in S&E is a valuable opportunity that provides a practical application to many Florida State Standards, especially MU.912.F.3.3 (Define, prioritize, monitor, and successfully complete tasks related to individual musical performance or project presentation, without direct oversight, demonstrating skills for use in the workplace). We also fulfill standards such as MU.912.C.2.1, MU.912.C.3.1, MU.912.F.3.2, MU.912.S.3.1, MU.912.S.3.5, and many more).

Checking in at Rockledge HS

There is no "formal" check-in required when you arrive at Rockledge HS. However, at the Information Table will have a friendly volunteer to confirm your performance time and provide you a campus map if needed indicating your warm-up and performance locations. We will not have any last-minute changes at our table (if you switched your 4pm performance with someone at your school doing a 9am performance, we won't know that). See your Orchestra Director for more information.

Handicap Accessibility

All performance rooms and Warm-Up areas are on the ground floor. If you need accommodations or assistance please ask your Director to contact Rockledge HS, or let us know at the Information Table and we will take care of you.

Rockledge HS will have signs posted everywhere indicating where you need to go. For your convenience, we do recommend visiting the Information Table (optional).

Rockledge HS cannot change performance times, rooms, instrumentation, music, or personnel lineups. These are questions for your school's Orchestra Director. If you cannot find your school's Orchestra Director, let us know at the Information Table and we will make an attempt to contact your Director.

Rockledge HS and the Florida Orchestra Association cannot violate copyright laws by providing copies of music for a student, or a judge. If you have legal permission from the publisher to make copies, you may do so at an off campus location. We appreciate your understanding in advance.

Atlantic Strings (music store) will be on site for your Solo & Ensemble needs. They will be near the Warm Up Room and have strings, tuners, rosin, mutes, polish, music stands, t-shirts, bumper stickers, and other small accessories on hand. A technician will also be on site to assist with minor repairs, such as installing new strings, fix a slipping peg, resetting a bridge, etc. Atlantic Strings is a BPS approved vendor used by many orchestra programs in Brevard County.

Ratings will be posted outside the cafeteria. We know you have worked hard and have spent hours working on your music for this event and you are eager to hear the rating. Rockledge HS will work with FOA to post your scores as quickly as we receive them.

Rating System

Superior with Distinction (Orchestra only) - A performance worthy of superior ratings in each caption that is performed from memory.

Superior - Fluent and clear. There may be minor inconsistencies, but overall a solid performance worthy of recognition.

Excellent - A good performance with well established fundamentals, but provides some opportunities for refinement

Good - A performance that may have a few strong moments but leaves many opportunities for improvement.

Fair - A performance with musical elements that are distracting to the overall composition. Major refinement is required before attempting repertoire at this level again.

Poor - A performance that is unrecognizable.

Comments Only - A performance where a rating is not assigned but the adjudicator provides written and verbal feedback on outstanding moments and opportunities for improving.

DNA - Did not arrive to the performance.
