Weekly Update 9/17/17


Dear Students and Parents, 

 

  Thank you so much for all the updates after Irma. My heart goes out to all of you who have been affected, and I hope you are recovering well. I know the next week will be a little crazy, and students are encouraged to see me if they need assistance or have questions. All-County material is now available, and students are encouraged to audition. Here is your band update...

 

9/18 – 9/22

Monday – Percussion Ensemble (drum line) after school 3:30 – 5pm

Tuesday – Indian Time: Brass Choir and woodwind sectionals

Wednesday – Jazz Listening/Context Quiz #2; Playing Quiz Day for Periods 1, 3, and 4, Uniform fees due (Wind Ensemble)

Thursday – Indian Time: Woodwind choir and brass sectionals, All-County Forms Due

Friday – Indian Time: Jazz combo, Tri State/Festival of Winds nominations due, Band officer elections

Saturday – All-State Auditions @ Edgewood

Beginning Band – Fundamentals of air, embouchure, aperture, and grip; Playing Quiz – #12 in book, F Scale, Advanced students – 7 Major Scales

Symphonic Band – First scale warm-up; Advanced students prepare an audition; Playing Quiz – #12 in book, F Scale, Advanced students – 7 Major Scales

 

All-State Auditions – All-State auditions are September 23 at Edgewood. We are accepting donations for the directors’ breakfast. Thank you to those parents who have offered to help!! Students can earn 6 service learning hours for volunteering at All-State Auditions. Students can click HERE to sign up to volunteer.

 

All-County Concert Bands – Music and requirements are now available. Please click HERE to access our website for requirements, etudes, and contracts. Students are encouraged to seek out private lessons. A list of teachers is attached. Please email me with questions.


Band Calendar – We are doing our annual Band Calendar photo shoot September 25 – 29. A schedule is attached. All students are encouraged to attend on the day assigned to the instrument, as well Wednesday for the Big Band picture. Jazz students are also asked to stay for a Jazz photo shoot on Friday. Themes for each shoot will be sent out this week. Students should be done by 4:15pm each day (including Wednesday).

 

Tri-State Band Festival @ FSU and Festival of Winds @ USF – Please click HERE for more information about FSU and HERE for information about USF. Students in grades 11 – 12 can be nominated by submitting the uploaded form no later than Friday, September 22. Please make sure you can attend before requesting to be nominated!

 

Fall Kick-Off!! – We are in the process of rescheduling our Fall Kick-Off.  Discount cards will be available for $10, and 50% of the proceeds benefit Edgewood Band. Friends and family can also order from the online catalogue (visit our website!). To help keep our program healthy and thriving, we’re asking each of our students to raise a minimum of $25 profit or donation. The proceeds from this fundraiser are dedicated to our budget for clinicians and supplies. Please support the Edgewood Bands!

Dear Students and Parents, 

 

   I am very proud of our students for proudly representing our band program this week! Mrs. Lowe and Ms. Allen, retired band directors from West Shore and Space Coast Jr/Sr HS, filled in for me while I was at ESF, and both of these ladies commented on the respect and kindness shown by our students. Parent Collective Meeting – Please consider joining us this Thursday, 7pm @ Merritt Square Mall. There are lots opportunities to get involved over the next few week, and information will be provided.

Edgewood Band Party – On September 15, all band students are encouraged to attend a party in the band room after school to celebrate Homecoming 2017! Join us after the pep rally for a movie night, and hear the Pep Band play at the Homecoming Volleyball game! More details will be sent out next week. I am planning for Papa John’s pizza, but I’m totally open to any ideas from parents about food that evening. J

   I hope you all had a great week! Grades have been posted to Edline. There was a delay, as band schedules (and course codes) have been changing. Contracts are available on our website (link below). Students may still turn these in for partial credit, and may see me with questions. As ever, students are welcome to speak with me regarding their grades, as extra credit is available. 8/14 – 18

Monday – Wind Ensemble percussion auditions 3:30 – 5pm

Tuesday – Course contracts due for all classes

Wednesday – All-State Contracts and $10 due

Friday – Tri-M and Band officer meeting during Indian Time

Beginning Band – Explore instruments, basics of notation

Symphonic Band – Build on prior understanding of music reading and fundamentals

 

Melodies and Masterpieces Concert – Sunday, August 20th at Advent Lutheran Church, concerts are at 3pm and 6pm. These annual concerts feature music educators from around Brevard County. This does count toward first semester concert credit.

Parent Help Needed – Help is needed with writing receipts Thursday morning; assistance is also needed in the afternoon with fitting students for uniforms and taking measurements for new uniforms to be purchased (day flexible)


Student Help Needed – We are in the process of filing and cataloguing our new music. Assistance is also needed with stacking stands and chairs at the end of the day. Students should see Ms. Russell for more information about service learning opportunities.


All-State Auditions – All-State auditions are September 9 at Edgewood. Students need to click HERE to indicate their desire to audition. Contracts are generated online, and specific to each student, so this will allow me to get contracts out the first week of school. Signed contracts and $10 (payable to Edgewood) are due no later than Wednesday, August 16.
