LIQUID ACRYLIC INK PAINTING

PROJECT:

We will use some super messy, super fun materials to create "liquid" paintings on boards and canvases.

MATERIALS WE WILL USE:

  1. Liquitex Liquid Acrylic Inks
  2. Liquitex Pouring Medium
  3. plastic squirt bottles
  4. plastic cups
  5. liquid silicone
  6. painting boards and canvases
  7. palette knives

IDEAS TO CONSIDER:

  • COLOR! Keep it simple and let just a few colors mix naturally on the board/canvas to reveal unexpected secondary colors, rather than using too many colors at once and having the colors mix to a brown shade.
  • ACCENT COLOR! White, black, or something else?
  • TILT THE CANVAS and let the colors travel.
  • DRAG A POINTED EDGE through the paint.
  • SPLATTER LIQUID SILICONE to create "cells" or bubbles.
  • INCORPORATE METALLICS for a hint of shimmer and shine.
  • EXPERIMENT WITH POURING BOTTLES to control when you squirt your colors.
  • TRY A DIRTY "POUR" by using a plastic cup and pre-mixing your colors.

SOME IDEAS FROM THE INTERNET:

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP DIGITAL COLLAGE

PROJECT:

To help us learn how to use Adobe Photoshop, we are going to be creating Digital Collages on our computers (see the examples below).

CREATE A NEW DOCUMENT:

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop and go to "File" and click on "New."
  2. Select "Print" and make sure your document is "Letter" size (8.5 x 11 inches), you may use either "orientation" (portrait or landscape).
  3. Change the name of the new document from "Untitled" to (YOUR NAME) Digital Collage (i.e. Kiely Digital Collage)

FIND SOME SOURCE IMAGES:

  1. Scroll through the inspiration images below to get some ideas for your Digital Collage.
  2. Once you have a plan, open your browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.) and use Google to search for IMAGES that you will save to your computer to use in Photoshop.
  3. BEFORE YOU SAVE ANY IMAGES, make sure you are searching for LARGE. To filter your search, click on "Tools" at the top of the Google images search, then click on "Size" and choose "Large." (if your images are too small or poor quality, your Digital Collage will appear pixellated or blurry).
  4. To save an image, click on the image to make it as large as possible, then "right click" on the image ("control" + click on a Mac) and select "Save Image As..."
  5. Save the image to a NEW FOLDER ON YOUR DESKTOP on your computer and name the folder "Art Source Images."

EXPERIMENT WITH PHOTOSHOP:

  • Open one of your source images (go to "File" and click on "Open" and select the image from you "Art Source Image" Folder on your desktop).
  • Try to cut and copy images from your source images into your Digital Collage. Try using the "Polygonal Lasso" to select your content, and then use keyboard shortcuts to "Copy" (command C) and "Paste" (command V) source images into your Digital Collage.
  • Use the "Transform" (command T) tool to change the size of your images. Hold the "shift" key down if you want your image to keep the same proportions when you resize it. Click the check mark at the top of the window when you are finished.
  • "Copy" and "Paste" a background image into your collage (or make one).
  • Try to use the "Paint Brush" tool to add some hand drawn elements to your design. Make sure to keep these drawings on a separate layer so you can hide or delete them if necessary.
  • Try to use the "Polygonal Lasso" tool and then apply a "Feathered" effect by clicking on "Select" at the top of the window, and then "Modify" and then "Feather." This effect will make your image blend into images that you put behind it.
  • See if you can make a shape and change its color AND change its transparency.

HELPFUL KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS:

  • UNDO - command/control Z
  • CUT - command/control X
  • COPY - command/control C
  • PASTE - command/control V
  • DESELECT - command/control D
  • TRANSFORM - command/control T
  • ZOOM OUT - command/control -
  • ZOOM IN - command/control +
  • FIT ON SCREEN - command/ctrl 0

MOST HELPFUL TIPS:

EXPERIMENT! Trial and error is the best way to learn how to use computer programs.

Hover your cursor over the tools for a moment and text will appear that identifies each tool.

Search Google for answers to your problems. For example, if you are trying to create a shape and you can't figure it out, do a Google search for "create shape in Photoshop" and you will find plenty of techniques and even some YouTube videos (that you would have to watch at home, unfortunately).

SOME IDEAS FROM THE INTERNET:

If you would like to learn some Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator tips and tricks on your own, check out these tutorials:

DOWNLOAD ADOBE PHOTOSHOP + ILLUSTRATOR.

About this year's Art Club:

If you missed the first meeting or any meeting throughout the year, you may still join the Art Club at any time.

We will continue to meet a few times a semester until the end of the school year for at least 10 meetings in all. To accommodate more student schedules, we will meet on different days of the week throughout the year. You may attend all the meetings, or just the meetings that fit into your schedule.

We aim to treat this as an actual "club" and less like an art class that would have a strict beginning and end.

However, we will still be making plenty of art at these meetings, with more focus on experimenting with various mediums and new projects.

The fee for Art Club is $100 for the entire year to cover the cost of supplies and computer software (see below).

NEW FOR 2018: Digital Arts!

In addition to painting, drawing, and sculpture, each Art Club member will receive an access code to download two Adobe Creative Suite programs called Photoshop and Illustrator. These are professional graphic design programs used by artists all over the world.

Mrs. DiCarlo will use her background in Graphic Design and Digital Arts to lead Art Club members through some really fun art projects on our computers.

And because Art Club members will have the programs on his or her own computer for the duration of the school year, he or she may work on these fun projects at anytime, at home or at school.

Possible digital art projects include:

        • logo design
        • poster design
        • T-shirt design
        • digital painting
        • photo editing
