Welcome to my Classroom
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to my class! Hopefully you guys are getting used to checking the website daily for announcements and you guys don't miss out on any of the lessons. I update them everyday M-F and will hope to upload a new YouTube video every Monday to help support our students in distance learning. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at dewey.huang@sesd.org
Just a reminder for how to turn in your CERs. First title your document "Your Name + L# CER" For example "Tom Holland L2 CER". Second, click on the folder here to access the "DL CER" folder. Then on your original document, click the small folder next to the document title, click on "shared with me" and then open the "DL CER" folder and then click "Move Here" Done!
Also, please create a document titled "Your Name + RR" and put it in this SCIENCE RR folder (follow the instructions for how to turn in your CERs above). Whenever I assign any future readings or worksheets please answer the questions on the same document for the rest of the year, I will be checking this document and your CERs for your participation.
Announcements!
6/1/20
Hey guys, hope you had a great weekend and things are wrapping up for you in terms of school. Sorry for the late posting but there was some difficulties with internet and power outage where I live and couldn't upload the video to YouTube until today. Before you get to that video, please check out the answer key to the Chemistry Final that I assigned to you guys last week. If you haven't done the final yet you can CLICK HERE to get it. If you'r ready to check your work you can CLICK HERE for the Answer Key.
I told students over our last Zoom meeting that if you brought me a copy of the test completed next year, I'd trade you some candy for it and that offer still stands. Until then, make sure you guys stay safe and healthy! Thanks so much for being a great and understanding class in these hard times, you guys are amazing and I'm proud to have been your teacher! have a great summer!
5/28/20
Okay, as promised, I wont be assigning anything else besides the Chemistry Final that you can CLICK HERE to get a copy of. It's 6 pages long and covers everything that we went over in Chemistry over distant learning. I don't think any of the questions are particularly had and I know that there isn't anything in there that I didn't cover. Just take your time and work on it over the week. We'll go over the answers on Friday. If you would like me to grade your test please email me your answers and I'll give you a grade you would've have gotten on it. Otherwise, I'll see you on Friday's Zoom, which incidentally the LAST Zoom session of the year. See you there!

Alright guys, with this being more or less the last week on instruction, it's time for you to show me what you learned. CLICK HERE to get a copy of the Final Test. Yes, it's 6 pages long, and YES I would have given you this test in class if the year went normally. Luckily for you, you get to take it at home, have all your notes, and have as much time as you need. I know it might be a lot but I know that you guys will be able to get through it. I will be answering your questions ABOUT the test during our zoom meeting today, but I will go over the answers on our Last Zoom meeting Friday. If possible, you should print out the test, if not, you can write it out on a separate piece of paper. I won't be collecting it, but if school returns to normal next year, you can bring your completed test to me to exchange for a reward (candy).

Hey guys, happy Memorial Day! Even though today is a national holiday, I still got that weekly content for you. You're welcome, no need to thank me. Anyways, this is the LAST instructional episode and therefore the last CER that you have to do for me this year! Please check out the video down below, we'll go over the CER on Wednesday during Zoom. I'll also be uploading a "Test" on Wednesday for you guys to take here. We'll go over the answers for that on Friday's Zoom session. In the mean time, check out the episode down below and have a great day! See you Wednesday!
5/21/20
Hey guys, since I feel like I've been overloading you with worksheets as of recent, today is going to be pretty simple. Please click on this link here to check out the Bill Nye: Chemical Reactions episode. Please take down in your notebooks 5 facts, 3 questions, and a description of a model they used in the episode. I'll ask you to share them on Friday's Zoom meeting. Shout out to Dartmouth Middle School for illegally posting the video for me to use...
5/20/20
Hey guys, here is YET another practice worksheet for you guys on balancing equations. For extra practice, don't forget to identify what type of reaction that you're balancing. We'll go over the answers on Today's Zoom session as usual. Also, don't forget to email me if you have any questions or need help with any topic. You can CLICK HERE FOR THE WORKSHEET. Just in case you think this is the same as yesterday's post because it looks and sounds the same... this is here to tell you that it's not. So... yeah. See you on Zoom, or not... whatever.
5/19/20
Hey guys, here is another practice worksheet for you guys on balancing equations. For extra practice, don't forget to identify what type of reaction that you're balancing. We'll go over the answers on Wednesday's Zoom session as usual. Also, don't forget to email me if you have any questions or need help with any topic. You can CLICK HERE FOR THE WORKSHEET
5/18/20
Hey guys, another week, another episode. You can check it out below as usual. This week we'll be going over different types of reactions and you'll need your notebook as usual to copy down the notes. Other than that, there is you usual CER that we'll go over on Wednesday as well as some review worksheets that I will assign tomorrow. With just 3 more weeks of school, I hope that you guys are able to stay focused and get things done so that you can eventually get out and enjoy your summer break.
5/15/20
Hey guys, we're back on schedule for our 2pm Friday Zoom meeting, we'll be going over the yesterdays practice worksheet which you can find HERE for balancing equations. Make sure you have some paper ready so that you can follow along as I go through each one. If you've got it done, have your answers ready so you can double check your work. Have a great weekend if you don't get a chance to log in.
5/14/20
Hey guys, looks like a lot of you guys have been getting on top of turning in CERs the last couple days and I want to say great job catching up. Like I said, i'll be checking the Science RR documents next week and making sure you guys are getting caught up there. If you don't know where the old assignments are, they're all listed below. I will probably do a site redesign to organize all the old posts this weekend if there is time.
For today, here is a practice sheet for balancing equations, we'll go over the answers all on Friday during our Zoom meet, hope to see you there!
5/13/20
Hey guys, by now I have emailed every single one of you about your CERs and either asked you to get some turned in or praised you for being on top of things. Please make sure that you are getting those done. Those are really the only tools I have for assessing your understanding of the material. If you need help or don't understand something please let me know and we can set aside some time to work 1 on 1 to get you all set up.
For today, please do the RR worksheet that you can access by CLICKING HERE. Answer them in your science RR documents. There is a section of it that asks what type of reaction it is, don't worry about it for now, we'll go over that in the next YouTube episode. I will be checking your Science RR documents next week and emailing those of you who are not getting things done. At the end of next week I will likely be making personal phone calls home to students who haven't gotten enough things turned in. Otherwise I'll see you on the Zoom!
5/12/20
Hopefully you had a chance to check out the video for the lesson balancing equations, I guarantee you that we'll have equation balancing problems later this week (Thursday for sure) so make sure you check it out before then. Otherwise, please read over this section summary, you can get the file by CLICKING HERE. You need to of course answer the four questions on top in your science RR. This is the week that I'll be diving into everyones CERs and science RR documents and filing out a participation report, so make sure you get as much work in as possible. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll see you guys on Wednesday for the Zoom meeting.
5/11/20
Whats going on guys, welcome back to another week of of Distance Learning. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sick of it and am really hoping for all of this to be behind us. Until then though, still going to be pushing out weekly content. Please check out the video below or click this link, it's a bit of a longer one since you'll need to take notes and the CER is not a paragraph but a couple of balancing equation problems. We'll go over those this Wednesday over Zoom.
5/8/20
Hey guys, no Zoom meeting today, I have a conflicting meeting that popped up last minute. Please e-mail me any questions you might have from the reactivity of the metals shown in the video on Wednesday. For today, just check out this video when you have time. No need for notes, but give it a watch.
5/6/20 & 5/7/20
So I'm posting this early, but during the live Zoom we watched a video demo of Mrs. Messner burning different elements and compounds. You can check the video out here by clicking on THIS LINK. While you watch the video, I want you to write down each element and compound, and rate them (1 - 3, 3 being super reactive and 1 being not so reactive) in terms of reactivity. You can also write different notes down of the different reactions each element/compound had with the flame.
Hey guys, hope to see you on the zoom meeting today, we'll be going over the CER from the video and then we'll be watching a discussing another science demo. In the mean time here is the Review and Reinforce worksheet that corresponds with yesterday's reading. You can find it by following this link HERE. Make sure you answer it in your science RR document. See you guys on Zoom!
5/5/20
Hey guys, hope you had a chance to watch the video from yesterday, it's a short one so it should be pretty easy to get through. Make sure you get the CER turned in as usual. I will be going over the chemical reaction on Wednesday during the Zoom. It's been awhile since you got one of these, but please answer the key concept questions in your science RR document. You can CLICK HERE for the link to the reading
5/4/20
Hey guys, it's another week and so it's another episode for you guys. It's a shorter episode this week since there are lighter restrictions for shelter in place, maybe you'll have an opportunity to get out and do something. Check it out below and turn in your CER in the folder as usual.
4/30/20
Hey guys, was nice to catch up with some of you during the Zoom yesterday, hopefully I'll see more of you tomorrow during the zoom meeting. Speaking of tomorrow's Zoom, we'll be going over the worksheet i'm assigning today, please click the link here to get it. To help you with the polyatomics "SO4" = "Sulfate", "OH" = "Hyrdroxide", "NO3" = "Nitrate", & "CO3" = Carbonate. Sorry that the numbers aren't subscripts, but they're supposed to be. (;-_-)
Also if you didn't catch yesterday and the day before's Chemthink lesson, make sure you check out the posts from the last 2 days to get the link.
4/29/20
Hey guys, hope to see you guys at today's Zoom meeting from 2 - 2:30. The invite was sent out via google calendar and you should already have all the information to log in there. Today we'll be going over the CER question that was brought up in episode 6. If you haven't had a chance to watch it, please check it out below, like and subscribe, blah blah blah.
Otherwise, today's activity is similar to yesterday's Chemthink activity. Obviously, this time we'll be covering Covalent bonds. Please follow the link here to get to the site. If you haven't had a chance to go over the Ionic Bonds, please check yesterday's post for the link. Finally, as per request, the banner is THOR!!!
4/28/20
Hope you guys had a chance to check out the new video that came out yesterday, check it out below. We'll go over the material on Wednesday's Zoom meeting from 2pm - 2:30pm. Don't forget to upload your CER in the folder. As for today, there is a interactive website located here. You will have to make up a guest name, but go through the lesson on Ionic Bonds, it does a pretty good job of illustrating some details that I won't be able to go over easily over DL. Have fun!
4/27/20
What's going on guys, welcome back to another week of school, hope you guys did something fun over the weekend or at the very least didn't have to do too much work. I have the new episode listed for you below, please check that out. We'll go over the material on Wednesday's Zoom meeting from 2pm - 2:30pm. Don't forget to upload your CER in the folder and, as always, if you have any questions, let me know!
4/24/20
Hey guys, thanks for coming to the Zoom today, I'm glad I got to go over some of the content with you guys and as promised here is the practice worksheet that is ENTIRELY optional. Feel free to work on it if you want and ask questions, but it's up to you. Have a great weekend, new episode on Monday. Also, it'd help me out if you could like and subscribe to the videos so you don't miss out on the content... and I don't have to keep emailing you about it.
4/23/20
Hey guys, it was great to hear some of your voices and to see a lot of students getting engaged in the classes work yesterday on Zoom. I'll be hosting another Zoom session this Friday at 2pm. I was going to assign you a new worksheet today, but I decided since so many of you guys are getting online in the class and have a lot to catch up on, we'll skip it today.
4/22/20
All of you should have received a calendar invite for the Zoom meeting today @ 2pm. I'll be going over the drawings from this Monday's video. Some of you have already finished your drawings and will want to double check your work, while those of you who haven't can get it done along with me and turn it into the CER folder.
Also, for today's RR work, please follow this link to the Review and Reinforce worksheet on Covalent bonds. You can answer the questions in your RR document. If you get to this assignment early and need help, please feel free to ask about it during today's Zoom meeting. Speaking of which, here is the link to the meeting, the PW is in your invite.
Finally, I understand that a certain Social Studies teacher has a meeting set at the same time even though SS is supposed to set meetings from 1 - 2pm... so if you have another meeting you must attend, please feel free to skip mine, you can ask questions on Friday anyway. This should be taken care of in the future.
4/21/20
In case you missed it, episode 5 can be found below as well as links to the previous episodes., There isn't a CER but you have to do some practice drawings of different compounds. You can take a picture of your drawings and paste them into a document and upload it the same way you would a regular CER. "Your Name + L5 CER". We will go over the problems on Wednesday's (2pm - 2:30pm) Zoom meeting, there is one problem that needs a little more work then the rest of them to figure it out, try to look for what is missing and remember the rule of 8.
Also, for today's RR work, please follow this link to today's reading, and answer the 3 key concept questions in your RR document.
4/20/20
What's up guys, hope you guys had a good spring break. New episode can be found below, please take some time to watch it. There isn't a CER but you have to do some practice drawings of different compounds. You can take a picture of your drawings and paste them into a document and upload it the same way you would a regular CER. "Your Name + L5 CER".
I'll also be adding and moving our Zoom meetings starting this week. There will be live meetings on Wednesday and Friday from 2:00pm - 2:30pm every week, please stop by if you can. Wednesdays will be used to go over the work for the week and sometimes a live lesson. Fridays will be more of a hangout/check-in day. Hope to see you guys there, have a great week!
4/17/20
What's going on guys, sorry for the late post, but here is the link to the Zoom meeting. I'll be one from 10 - 10:30. To answer any questions about our science materials. Meeting ID: 241 257 0029 Password: ********
4/13/20
Hey everyone, hope you guys had a great Easter Sunday (if that is something you celebrate). I know it is the start of your "Spring Break" but I didn't want to lose the routine we finally were able to build up to over the last 4 weeks. Below you'll find the latest video on Drawing Ionic and Covalent bonds, there is a CER question at the end and you can turn it in as "Your name + L4 CER" in the CER folder.
Finally, I'll still host a Zoom meeting this Friday from 10 - 10:30, stop by if you want, I'll email you the link on Thursday. Have a great week, feel free to email me over break if you have any questions. I'll just be playing video games, cooking, and watching Netflix anyways.
4/10/20
Hey guys, was great to hear from some of you guys during the Zoom meeting. We'll do one every Friday and we'll go over material that we covered throughout the week.
In other news, there WILL be an episode next week. I know it's your break, but I won't be assigning anything else other than the video and the CER. It would just be too bad to lose the momentum we got going into this 5th week of shelter in place.
4/9/20
Hey everyone, here is the assignment for today, it's a worksheet on the material that you read about yesterday. Please write the answers in your Science RR document. If you didn't do the reading yesterday and answer the key concept questions in your science RR document, you can find it in the post below. Just make sure you press the arrow off to the right here. Tomorrow we'll have a open zoom meeting from 10 - 10:30am, keep an eye on your email for your invite tonight.
4/8/20
Today's lesson is another reading assignment, you don't need to annotate it, but you do need to answer the key concepts on your Science RR document. You can find that document by clicking here. Remember to get your CER done for episode 3 and don't forget you can join me in a live meeting on Friday from 10am - 10:30am. I'll email you the link and password tonight, hope to catch up with some of you there.
Also, here are the answers (SPOILERS AHEAD) to yesterday's naming the compounds practice. Make sure you only check this after you've tried to answer the questions yourself.
4/7/20
Hey everyone, hope you had a chance to check out the yesterday's episode. It's pretty long, but since the schools are now closed for the rest of the year, we're being told to make longer lessons. Make sure you turn in your CER paragraph in the folder by this Friday. I will be hosting a live Zoom "office hour" on Friday from 10am - 10:30am. I'll post the link up here on Wednesday and will also email you all.
For today, you'll need to use your RR document to answer the questions on this worksheet right here. I'll post the answers tomorrow, but try your best to answer as many of them as you can. Also, one of you requested a new banner, so enjoy.
4/6/20
Hey everyone, hope you guys had a good weekend and you were able to do something outside before the rain came. At least with the rain it makes it feel like you're not trapped inside because of some crazy disease, its just... you know, raining outside. Anyways, there is a new episode out. It's pretty long, but since the schools are now closed for the rest of the year, we're being told to make longer lessons. Make sure you turn in your CER paragraph in the folder by this Friday. I was in a meeting with other department leads last Friday for 2.5 hours (T_T) but we did discuss the fact that you guys are getting too much work in some classes. Hopefully things gets a little bit better and it isn't so overwhelming. Finally, I will be hosting a live Zoom "office hour" on Friday from 10am - 10:30am. I'll post the link up here on Wednesday and will also email you all. Be safe everyone, miss you guys!
4/3/20
Hello, as you can see I updated the above blurb to include the instructions for how to turn things in. So make sure that you get your CERs turned in and your Science RR document set up in the correct folder. I will say that all assignments that I assign should be turned in by 1 week after it's assigned. So the Reading Key Concepts for Atoms, Bonds, and the Periodic Table should be in your Science RR document by next Tuesday. Since you guys are adjusting to this new way of doing things, I wont be assigning anything today, just get caught up and ready for another episode next Monday.
4/2/20
Hey guys, just wanted say that I'm very impressed with how many more CERs are coming in and I appreciate you guys taking the time to do the work during these tough times. If you haven't had the chance to turn them in just upload them to this folder here. Please name your document "Your Name + L# CER" for example, "Tom Holland L2 CER
Also, some of you apparently didn't know you could click on the little arrow on the right side here to see all the old announcements... so yeah. there is that.
Today's assignment is pretty simple, click here to see the worksheet. You don't have to print it out, just answer the questions in your "ScienceRR" document that you placed in the SCIENCE RR Folder. Remember to title your document "Your Name + RR" before you put it in the folder. You will just continue to update this RR(reader response) document for the rest of the year.
4/1/20
So I've been hearing that you guys are receiving way too much work from your teachers and it's overwhelming during this stressful time. So in order to address this issue, I realized that I'm not assigning enough work and I should keep up with other classes and give you more work. So please write me a 2 page paper on the difference between ionic and covalent bonds. This is due tomorrow!
April fools...
I do hear you guys that there is too much work coming out, so today's assignment is to just get caught up on turning in both CERs from the last two weeks to the folder. Just upload them to this folder here. Please name your document "Your Name + L# CER" for example, "Tom Holland L2 CER"
Other than that, try to stay sane being stuck inside. I will have something for you tomorrow, but for today, relax with science and make sure you get caught up in your other classes. Take care, stay safe, miss you guys, see you tomorrow!
3/31/20
Hey guys, hope you guys had a chance to check out the new YouTube lesson, if not you can check it out below, make sure you write and send in your CERs to me. In fact, instead of emailing go ahead and upload them to this folder here. Please name your document "Your Name + L# CER" for example, "Tom Holland L2 CER" Also, sorry for doing this to you, but if you could upload your CER from lesson 1 into that folder that would be great...
Your grades are up to date on Powerschool, I combined the end of Tri-2 homework with the week of Tri-3 homework into one assignment and your test scores for the phases of matter test are also up. If you want to retake your test you can set up a Google Meet or Zoom meeting through email and you can retake your test live with me.
Okay, for today's assignment, you will need to download or save this PDF of your reading. I won't ask you to print it out and mark the text, but I will ask that you create a google doc to answer the key concept questions on. You can use this same document for all the readings I assign from now on. It would also make sense to use this document to take down any notes and definitions of key terms. IF we come back to school you WILL be able to use this document on any test that you get when we come back.
That's it for today, see you tomorrow!
3/30/20
Hey guys, hope you guys had a good weekend and you guys did something interesting or different from your weekly routine. I could use some Netflix suggestions so shoot me a comment below if you have one.
Speaking of things to watch, the next YouTube lesson is out and you can check it out below, make sure you write and send in your CERs to me. In fact, instead of emailing go ahead and upload them to this folder here. Please name your document "Your Name + L# CER" for example, "Tom Holland L2 CER"
Also, sorry for doing this to you, but if you could upload your CER from lesson 1 into that folder that would be great... this isn't so much for me, but for the... "few" students... who didn't turn one in last week. There is a playlist on my channel so you can watch the first lesson too.
Also your grades are up to date, I combined the end of Tri-2 homework with the week of Tri-3 homework into an average to help lift some of your scores. Also your test scores for the phases of matter test are up. If you want to retake your test you can set up a Google Meet or Zoom meeting through email and you can retake your test live with me.
That's it for today, see you tomorrow!
3/27/20
Reminder for those of you who haven't already turned it in, but make sure your Element Trading Card projects are completed by the end of the day today 3/27!! You will need to take two pictures of them, one picture with all 4 card's images and another with all 4 card's informational backings. You should put your images into a Google doc titled with your first and last names + ECP. For examples, "Lebron James ECP". Then you should share that document with me. Also your CER from the video is due today, there is another video + CER on Monday coming up.

3/23/20
So after working with the rest of the 7th grade team, we've come up with a pretty good schedule of lessons for you guys for at least the next couple weeks. We may not all be following the exact schedule at the same time, but we should all be covering the same topics. Speaking of topics, your first video is a review of the material we covered right before school was cancelled. Make sure you watch it because your first assignment is due on Friday via e-mail. Also, the school asked that we have "office hours" which are times where you can contact us. You can honestly e-mail me anytime and I will likely respond, but if you e-mail me between the hours of 10am - 12pm, Monday through Friday, I will try my best to respond right away.
3/19/20
Hey Guys, I'm currently filming the first lesson for YouTube and I should be able to put out two a week starting next Monday. I will also be working with the other 7th grade teachers to put together a plan to assign lessons from the resources the district sent out here. Will update you guys tomorrow to let you know what we plan on doing. Otherwise enjoy the rest of the week and the weekend, lessons will start Monday 3/23.
3/18/20
Hope everyone is doing well and have adjusted to constantly being home. In all this time I have spent SO much time on Amazon and am very proud to say that I only bought like 5 completely unnecessary things. In the last couple of days the district has been hard at work to organize and kick off our "distance learning" goals. By now you should have received a link to some basic resources listed here. To be honest I myself am unsure how I, or the science department, will be utilizing these materials. There is a meeting tonight to help decide how these will be used at the district level and the work will mostly be pushed down to the department level to figure out. Stay safe!
3/16/20
Hello students and parents,
I know it has been a very long while since I updated this website but in response to the current situation revolving around the COVID-19 virus, I will be using this site as a hub for all the digital learning material that I will be putting out for my 7th grade science classes. Starting the week of March 23rd I will be releasing a series of YouTube videos going over the concepts that we will be covering. I will also include links to the homework assignments in the descriptions of the videos.
Also, if you have any questions, drop me an e-mail dewey.huang@sesd.org
