Categories: Assignments and assessments will be broken up and graded in two categories, formative and summative.
Formative: Formative assessments are collected and graded to check student progress and understanding throughout a particular unit. These can come in the form of class activities, assignments, some projects, quizzes, etc.
Summative: Summative assessments measure student proficiency. These come in the form of tests, some quizzes, final projects, etc. and will typically be found at the end of a unit. These grades demonstrate what the student has learned from a unit. Summative assessments have a greater impact on a student's grade, as there are fewer of these assessments compared to formative assessments.
Grading Systems: I use two different systems for grading in my classroom. The first system is the traditional percentage system on a 0-100 scale. This scale will be used for grading many quizzes and tests. The other system I will be using is a 1-4 scale. This scale will be used for grading classroom assignments, projects, labs, etc. The numbers on this scale represent the following percentages:
Upgrading
Students who are not satisfied with their performance on quizzes and tests are able to retake the assessment. Students MUST complete the upgrade within three class periods after receiving the original grade. Also, students must complete a retake ticket that requires him/her to outline what they have done to prepare for the retake and it also needs to be signed by a parent.
Homework
I view homework not only as a great way to practice the concepts and skills we are working on in class, but also as a way of building organizational and preparation skills. Students are expected to have homework assignments completed by the due date.
Homework Grading: Homework is graded on a 0-3 system. Homework completed on-time and done with reasonable effort will receive a 3. Homework not completed on time but turned in by the end of the day will receive a 2. Homework turned in after the day it is due will receive a 1. A zero indicates that the assignment has not yet been completed. I encourage both parents and students to keep track of homework assignments in Web2School regularly.
Parents and students:
If for some reason a student realizes he or she can't complete the assignment at home for one reason or another, please feel free to email me explaining the circumstances and I will be happy to provide options. (Jdale@sedomocha.org)
