Writing and Pre-writing Skill Development

Pre-writing Shapes

Letters

Numbers

Below are ways you can get your child involved in fine motor strengthening activities and creative ways to engage your child in writing.

Cooking

Cooking gives parents and their children a way to engage in fun learning experiences and allows the kiddo to contribute to family chores.

While cooking you can talk about the ingredients that you are using. You can allow your child the opportunity to touch it and talk about what it feels like. Is it Slimy? Sticky? Wet? Dry? Talk about what it smells like? Sour? Sweet? Spicy?

If you are baking with your child, they can bake their letters, numbers or prewriting shapes. This also works on finger dexterity as your child tries to manipulate the dough to form the correct letter, number or prewriting shape.

Play Dough

Students can form all of their shapes, numbers and pre-writing shapes with Play Dough. Play dough can also be used to play fine motor strengthening games such as hiding the beads in the Play Dough and then having your student find and pull out the beads.

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream is a really fun way to have your student engage in writing activities.

Exploring Outside

Take your student outside and play. This has so many benefits for your child and works on those much needed gross motor skills. While you're outside make letters, numbers or prewriting shapes with sticks. Or use a stick to form your letters, numbers or prewriting shapes in the dirt.
