Learning at home can be extremely challenging, so it is important to find a system to work for you. Here are some of my suggestions. I know we all have different situations that we are working with and we may not have as many resources available, but I want to offer some ideas.

If you have the luxury of two screens, use both. When you are in a Google Meet, it is hard to interact with the documents being used/explained. It is helpful to have one screen for the meet and another for the assignment. If you have the luxury of a phone and a chromebook, use your phone for the meet and your chromebook for the work.

If you prefer working by hand and writing on things, you can print handouts in advance from Google Classroom so that you can highlight or take notes on it as you participate in the Google Meet.

Ask questions during class. When we are in a Google Meet, ask questions! But, please wait until after an assignment has been explained to ask questions as your questions may be answered along the way. If you are afraid you will forget your question, write it down.

When we are working independently during class, there will be a Google meet open. If you have questions, pop into the meet to ask them. It is much easier to communicate in-person. You can share your screen with me so I can see what you’ve done, and I can share my screen with you. You will get your answer much more quickly this way! If you send an email or message me through Classroom, I may not see it until later.

At the end of the day, there is time for you to work on independent work--finishing classwork or homework, get help from teachers, etc. Utilize this! I may not always be available because teachers have meetings during this time as well, but email me to set something up. You can also go back and review any videos in Google Classroom that are there to guide you.

Use a computer as opposed to a phone or tablet. If you need a chromebook, you can check one out from the district. With phones and tablets, you may not be able to “write on” documents or see my comments. You will be able to do your work more effectively, AND I will be able to give you more specific feedback when you work from a computer.

Use the copy created for you in Google Classroom. Be sure you are working from your district Google drive. This allows me to easily comment on your work while it is in progress and after it is turned in.

Yes, it feels strange to be on camera all of the time, but I need to be able to put your name to your face, and teachers informally assess all of the time by watching their students’ faces. By being able to see your face, I will get to know you faster, and I will be able to tell when I may be moving too fast or I need to re-explain something. Being face-to-face, even on the screen, makes it much easier to communicate.
