English Language Arts

Part of our Language Arts curriculum is from EL Education. The EL curriculum is a comprehensive, standards-based core literacy program that engages students through compelling, real world content. Our Reading block is structured so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy activities. Students will receive explicit whole-group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read. During that time, focused instruction will be provided to individual and small groups of students.

Our students will also participate in four novel studies throughout the year. These novels include Charlotte's Web, Stone Fox, I Survived The Great Chicago Fire, and Peter Pan. With each novel, the students will discover more about its genre and learn the literary devices in each of these pieces of rich literature.

Additionally, students will read from StoryWorks Jr magazines each month, which include non-fiction articles, fiction stories, plays, comparative texts, poetry, and more. These magazines are up-to-date with real world information that students find interesting.

Throughout the year, students will work on various writing projects. Some of these writing projects are in-depth, such as the Pest Report and Fuzzy Ball Writing. Other projects will not go as deep, such as The Best Part of Me and Friendly Letter writing.
