It may be helpful to use a place value chart for this problem.  Recall that you will be given a number between 1 and 1000 followed by the place value group indicator.  

So for seventy-six thousand, 76 is the number that needs to occupy the three corresponding thousands place as shown below.  Six hundred ninety-four isn't followed by a place value 

indicator which means it is referring to the one's place value group as shown below.
