It is strongly recommended that classrooms spend 30-40 minutes per week on keyboarding- not all in one session, but broken up into at least 2 sessions. It will no longer be done in SAM classes or Pathways.
It is perfectly acceptable to assign keyboarding practice as homework.
Here are 2 different resources I recommend for online keyboarding instruction and practice:
DanceMat Typing-- http://play.bbc.co.uk/play/pen/gv5zsrpyd3 Game-based instruction, does not track student progress, so students need to remember where they left off.
Typing.com- (formerly Typing Web) https://www.typing.com/ This site is less game-y, and shows visuals of how to type keys with correct fingers. You will need to set up a teacher account, create a class, then set up accounts for each student. This allows you to track each student's progress, and allows students to pick up where they left off each time. It really only takes a few minutes to set up-- very easy.
***New Guidelines for Creating Student Accounts*** If it is necessary to create student accounts for online use, use the 3-3-3 guideline- first 3 letters of first name, first 3 letters of last name, and LAST 3 of lunch number. For example, for Joseph Smith, lunch number 20598: username should be jossmi598. If the site requires you to give student names, use the first 3 of first and last name. Passwords can be whatever you choose.
