Did You Know?- a collection of stats and facts
The “Every Student Succeeds Act” represents an important shift in federal education policy to ensure that all students receive a well-rounded education that includes arts and music. Specifically, the bill’s inclusion of “music” and “arts” in the definition of a “Well-Rounded Education” marks an unprecedented step forward for music education.
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):
Supports a "well-rounded education." The previous term "core academic subjects," which does include arts and music, will be replaced with the phrase "well-rounded education." This language appears in Title I, where the largest portion of funds will be designated, and is also found over a dozen additional times throughout the bill, including within targeted and school-wide grants.
Replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The new bill puts an end to federal test-based accountability systems and allows states and school districts to decide how to individually weigh those tests.
STEM to STEAM - the "A" is for Arts. In a breakthrough moment during the bill's amendment process, the committee unanimously approved support for schools that provide a well-rounded education and integrate other academic subjects, including the arts, into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) courses.
Helps ensure equitable access to the arts. Under the new bill, each local educational agency plan is required to describe how they will monitor students' progress in meeting state standards, and how they will implement "a well-rounded program of instruction to meet the academic needs of all students."
