Third Grade Curriculum Overview

Welcome To The Third Grade!

Third grade is a busy place with so much to learn and explore. Here are some of the interesting things we will be learning about this year:

Math

One of the most exciting things we learn in the third grade is multiplication! Some of the other topics we will cover are geometry, fractions, division, and so much more. We will also be reviewing some of the skills you worked so hard to learn in second grade.

Reading

Read, read, read! We will be reading every day. There are many different genres we will explore. You will have your own reading text book to keep in your desk as well as a chapter book you will be reading with your reading groups. Third grade will also be piloting a new reading series. Our classroom library is also full of many wonderful books to enjoy.

Writing

We will be writing stories, poetry, letters, persuasive pieces, and essays all using the six traits writing model. Grammar and spelling will also be a part of our daily routine. Last but not least...we will be learning how to write in cursive which is very fun and exciting!

Social Studies

Geography is our main focus, both near and far. We learn about how to use and create our own maps. We will also be learning about the rainforest.

Science

This year, we will be looking at different science topics, such as:

Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems : We will be comparing life cycles, adaptations, and effects of environmental change on organisms. Life cycles and traits will also be explored.

Forces and Interactions: This unit explores the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of and objects. It also explores the relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.

Weather and Climate: We will be comparing weather around the world at certain times, and looking for a recording specific weather patterns.
