The AP English Literature and Composition course is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students will develop their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers.
Students will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Writing is an integral part of this course: assignments will focus on the critical analysis of literature and include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays. Units include practice in timed-essay writing and applying the various forms of literary criticism. Although critical analysis makes up the majority of student writing for the course, well-constructed creative writing assignments help students see from the inside how literature is written.
Participation in the course will be based on previous grades and departmental recommendation. Students electing this AP course should expect longer daily reading assignments as well as frequent, challenging writing assignments.
Students will be required to complete an extensive and demanding assignment during the summer.
Note: Successful completion of the AP English Literature exam may entitle the student to receive college credit, depending on the policy of the individual college and the test score. Students are expected to take the AP English Literature exam at the end of this course for a fee of approximately $100, payable to the College Board. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify for SAT waivers.
